What would a good BSD for a low end tablet be? reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deathscyther1HD · 2022-10-27 23:23 I have an ASUS T300 Chi as a secondary PC which I would like to try a BSD out on. I am unsure whether to pick NetBSD, FreeBSD, DragonflyBSD. I haven't considered OpenBSD because as far as I understand it's very security focused and a bit slower because of that. What are some advantages of the different BSDs and what filesystem would be good for an SSD on BSDs? I've been using F2FS on Linux until now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lightray22 · 2022-10-27 23:54 Not sure what that hardware is but note DragonFly is x86 only, no ARM. For the filesystem you'll just have to use UFS, I don't think they have F2FS. UFS works fine on real SSDs (not raw flash). What are you planning to use this for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LiamW · 2022-10-27 23:57 I wouldn't recommend DragonflyBSD for a desktop application period. Given the unique hardware, I'd start with OpenBSD or NetBSD and then try FreeBSD (I run FreeBSD as a desktop, but wifi support is better on OpenBSD and NetBSD). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swhizzle · 2022-10-28 00:20 I’d personally say try NetBSD, it’s served me well! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deathscyther1HD · 2022-10-28 06:23 I only use it for trying stuff and as a back up PC sometimes. It's an old 2-in-1 with an e-waste tier CPU (Intel, amd64) so there's not much I could do with it, without something lightweight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deathscyther1HD · 2022-10-28 06:36 Could you please elaborate on why you wouldn't recommend Dragonfly for a desktop application? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LiamW · 2022-10-28 09:26 it has the absolute least support you’ll find for desktop applications, running any BSD as a desktop is already a bit esoteric, don’t run the one that has the absolute smallest community and us so server performance focused. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deathscyther1HD · 2022-10-28 09:30 OK, so is FreeBSD the most desktop focused BSD? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LiamW · 2022-10-28 09:36 It has the largest library of desktop ports and most desktop users, generally. OpenBSD has. bit more support for x11/Desktop use built into the base install by default, but less apps and no more linux compatibility layer (no netflix / widevine drm option, limited Wine/gaming emulation, etc.). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KnuckleBine1 · 2023-01-13 01:47 I have looked upon the documentation of dragonflybsd and disliked it! I wanted to multiboot it with other systems and was planning to do by fixing Grub in the end and adding a menu entry for dfb but I am turned off by the documentation. Freebsd documentation is super. Do you think I should start with ghost or net bsd? What I understand about the different bsds is that each one has its one features that others don't have except ghostbsd, it is just freebsd with mate or something preinstalled! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LiamW · 2023-01-13 01:57 Ghost for desktop. NetBSD for playing in Unix. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KnuckleBine1 · 2023-01-13 02:00 Playing in unix means gaming? I am using a laptop. Intel CPU, AMD GPU. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LiamW · 2023-01-13 02:06 Unix is the multiuser operating system that mainframes and academic computing were based on. Linux is a clone of unix, mostly. You should checkout the history of unix on Wikipedia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KnuckleBine1 · 2023-01-13 02:13 I know what unix is and some of the history of operating systems. I just didn't understand what did you mean by your phrase as I see some people are trying to game on bsd which isn't the optimal platform for gaming. I guess you meant learning more of bsd or something... Thanks nonetheless
