How different is Chromium from Chrome? reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleW_ne · 2021-11-24 09:32 Most *BSDs don't support full Google Chrome (with the exception of FreeBSD with it's Linux emulator) what are the disadvantages of running Chromium in say OpenBSD or NetBSD other than the well know lack of being able to watch streaming services like Netflix. Are bookmarks still synced and packages because I've heard it both ways about those two things. Just want to know how crippled a Chrome one gets running Chromium? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reddit_original · 2021-11-24 11:03 >Most \*BSDs don't support full Google Chrome Google doesn't support BSD... Fixed that for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleW_ne · 2021-11-24 11:43 True. I guess my language was imprecise. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- craftkiller · 2021-11-24 14:06 Chromium lacks Chromecast support. I don't know the other differences, but that's the one I noticed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brynet · 2021-11-25 21:34 Chromecast support is enabled in OpenBSD's chromium port, I can verify "Cast..." appears in the right click menu. https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports-cvs&m=151416105921708&w=2 You just need to add `multicast=YES` in /etc/rc.conf.local for this to work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brynet · 2021-11-25 21:43 > Are bookmarks still synced Sync features have been disabled since March, 2021. Chromium builds are not permitted to use the Google API keys. https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports-cvs&m=161544126605997&w=2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleW_ne · 2021-11-26 08:10 Darn. That was one thing I was trying to figure out because I knew they did that for 3rd party Chromium clones. Dang it that was a super nice feature. It will be missed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleW_ne · 2021-11-26 13:57 According to that post it may be possible to hack it back in, but then you have to compile Chromium each time. Would be much simpler if Google just offered a binary Chrome for each of the *BSDs, but since Linux is just a by product of their Chromebook offerings that isn't going to happen anytime soon. I've been meaning to experiment with Linux Chrome inside a jail in FreeBSD 13, still running 12.x there. I wonder if on OpenBSD you could install Chrome in VMM in a Linux guest and then output the graphics with x11 forwarding or if that would be super duper slow. Why does Google have to take away the best feature about a google account? Darn it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleW_ne · 2021-11-26 14:35 For anyone reading this at a later date, this post claims to solve the syncing problem: https://gist.github.com/cvan/44a6d60457b20133191bd7b104f9dcc4 Untested at the moment.
