If your laptop has backlight keys, then just try kldloading acpi_video
-- works over here on my Zenbook.

I did. Like I said, the backlight control works and I'm getting acpi
events, and so a little shell glue will make the keys work.

What I'm asking about is getting the slider in Xfce to work so I get
OSD, can drag the slider, etc. Currently the functionality works but
it bypasses the DE instead of being integrated.
