The OpenBSD project celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of 6.8 - out now! reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NitroNilz · 2020-10-18 15:33 Hooray! And what nice artwork! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- truupe · 2020-10-18 21:26 Downloaded and installing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mcnst · 2020-10-19 04:28 Time flies. As a FreeBSD user at the time, I still remember first trying out OpenBSD in the early noughties to play with IPv6 via HE Tunnel Broker; I think 3.4/3.5 and 3.6 in 2004, which seemed like a pretty old/mature project at that time already; fast-forward to 2020, and it's amazing how far further we've come. It's kind of surreal to look back at it, and come to the realisation that you've actually been at the forefront of it all when all things are said and done, just because time flies so fast. My first contribution to OpenBSD got committed in 2004 -- that's 16 years ago now! Here's to another 25 years! And if you haven't tried any of the BSDs yet, now is as good a time as ever! It's great to see all of them still going strong after so many years! > *It is now official - Netcraft has confirmed: *BSD is dying* (c) 2002 Anonymous Coward, Slashdot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxbuild · 2020-10-19 04:36 Let's start to fill the new hardware database introduced in 6.8: pkg_add hw-probe hw-probe -all -upload See https://github.com/bsdhw/Trends/tree/master/Dist/OpenBSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-19 06:23 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smutticus · 2020-10-19 09:02 This is fascinating information and I think it's great that this capability exists. I look at an example output here. https://bsd-hardware.info/index.php?probe=11a0bbb73f I can tell the people who designed this made sure to not show anything that make the laptop identifiable. But my question is how is this maintained? What happens if one of the programs that this tool grabs output from changes its output. And it changes in such a way that it starts showing a hostname or an IP address. How is that being tracked to prevent it from happening? Because this DB is great if I'm thinking of attacking any of these systems. We never want any of this HW DB to be tied back to IP addresses or hostnames or anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxbuild · 2020-10-20 04:17 > And it changes in such a way that it starts showing a hostname or an IP address. How is that being tracked to prevent it from happening? It's depersonalized twice: on a client side + on the server side. We update server-side depersonalization scripts regularly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smutticus · 2020-10-20 09:16 Good stuff. Thanks for the reply.
