[serious] Why choose between OpenBSD, Hardenedbsd, etc. reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 06:23 What I mean is, would it be possible to take the best parts of each *BSD flavor’s kernel and merge them into a new-ish bsd flavor? I was looking at the HardenedBSD security feature comparison page and began wondering why tf we have to choose for some mitigations and not have them all. Maybe it’s the lack of sleep and I’m missing something obvious but I just want to know if it’s possible. I can learn the process and do it myself from there, but advice on where to begin or any pitfalls to avoid is appreciated. As is a summarized glossary of whatever key terms I should know to improve my google fu for this undertaking. edit: word stuff Edit 2: Got what I needed to get started. Thanks everyone! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 06:40 tl;dr can I create a hybridized OpenBSD and HardenedBSD kernel? Also, yes, the name would be RockHardBSD and the logo would be a chicken because I am an immature middle school boy at heart. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 07:35 No, this is not possible. They have at their heart the 4.4 BSD kernel, but are drastically different in so many ways. Run both systems in a VM or vps and see which one you like better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jaypatelani · 2020-10-16 07:53 Try all 4 Major BSDs in VM then decide. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _arthur_ · 2020-10-16 07:54 Realistically, no, you can't. It'd be a huge undertaking even for a large team. A diff of only the kernels is: "3170 files changed, 20295159 insertions(+), 18439793 deletions(-)" I'd also take the feature comparison page with a grain of salt. It's a marketing page, and reality is always a lot more complicated than marketing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:31 Man I get where you’re coming from but I’m basically Terry Davis without the schizophrenia. I’m a reclusive, ridiculously determined nerd ass with the time, money, and patience to devote myself to it. Plus, at the risk of sounding like a pseudo-intellectual dickhead, I’ve scored in the 90th percentile on every IQ test I’ve taken since I was five. I’ve fucking got this shit. Appreciate the answer tho. Pretty much confirms I was right to have my suspicions re: the feature comparison page on HBSD’s website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:31 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:32 I’ve deployed them all in production environments for extended periods of time because I’m a masochist and I enjoy putting myself through trials by fire. I have a lot of respect for all of them with the exception of NetBSD which... I mean, they’re doing the best they can. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:34 Objectively, from a privacy and security standpoint I stan the fuck out of daisy chaining Qubes/Xen (w/ whonix networking traffic over tor) > Hardenedbsd/Bhyve > OpenBSD for my daily driver but I don’t think most people will be cool with putting in the effort and making the compromises that kind of model entails. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:36 also, challenge accepted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:44 Dude, BSD kernel development is a whole other beast and OpenBSD is maintained by some of the best coders. Hit up the mailing list openbsd-tech with your idea, be ready to be schooled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:46 That’s next. Just wanted to get the opinion of the everyman. I do appreciate the realism but I don’t think you get how much I take “no you can’t do that” as a challenge. Childishly devoting myself to proving random people wrong is basically my heroin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:49 You do you man! Best of luck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:49 Plus, being schooled is both a learning experience and an opportunity to come back, slam my rebuttal on the table, await any constructive criticism until there’s none left to be offered, and then walk out while giving everyone the finger. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 08:51 Appreciate it bro. If reddit and/or your account is still alive in the next decade or so I’ll drop you the link. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 09:00 If you are serious about this, get involved sending diffs to either project first so you can get a feel for their development practices. OpenBSD is a bigger project than HardenedBSD. HardenedBSD is a soft fork of FreeBSD and follows upstream, I think its mostly administered by a small handful of devs (mostly Shawn Webb, who I recommend contacting, he's a really nice guy). OpenBSD is it's own independent operation with 20 years of history. It's devs are serious, and straight to the point. Some of them are smartest out there it comes to Computer Science and C programming, you've been warned 😂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-16 09:11 https://www.reddit.com/r/openbsd/comments/d9a8c9/comment/f1foqtp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lealxe · 2020-10-16 09:59 These are 4+ DIFFERENT OPERATING SYSTEMS. Sorry for caps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WalkingOnFire · 2020-10-16 15:06 Stop feeding the troll. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-17 00:20 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crocflamingo · 2020-10-17 00:21 ^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CSI_Tech_Dept · 2020-10-17 01:53 It's about tradeoffs. All BSDs try to satisfy all the features, they just have the priority lists in different order.
