DEs popularity in FreeBSD (by BSD-Hardware.info) reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rob2g2 · 2020-09-14 09:35 how big is the dataset? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- digifuzzy · 2020-09-14 09:36 Funny... KDE and Gnome went through uphevals of API's to be "hip". This chart speaks volumes to me about their success. XFCE and Mate quietly chug along... Then there are "terminal people" (you hard core types know who you are. ;) ). r/dataisbeatiful ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vext01 · 2020-09-14 11:03 Does "terminal" mean without X11 at all? I find it hard to believe that most people work that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eg_taco · 2020-09-14 11:43 I only run 3 FreeBSD machines and they’re all servers without desktop environments. If someone like me was counted on the data, I’d end up in “terminal” too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-09-14 11:53 My company had 10 FreeBSD workstations but one hundred FreeBSD servers. The 100 servers would be counted as terminals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-09-14 11:54 This looks reasonable based on what I read but I'm surprised twm is used that much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vext01 · 2020-09-14 12:02 I assumed that this didn't count servers :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-09-14 12:05 Why? While I wouldn't install the script needed to do that on 100 servers, I know one guy who did do it on his five servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OsrsNeedsF2P · 2020-09-14 12:11 334: http://bsd-hardware.info/index.php?view=computers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vext01 · 2020-09-14 14:02 It seemed obvious that when talking about desktop environments we are not talking about servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2020-09-14 14:21 That makes zero sense. The data isn't talking about workstations exclusively, but software/desktop popularity across all installs. No where does that information even suggest this data excludes servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2020-09-14 14:25 I suspect TWM might be installed as a dependency or backup to another package that is commonly used. My guess is that it is installed but people are not using it. I see this on some Linux distros where a distro installs something like Fluxbox or TWM, but it is only as a backup to the main desktop (KDE typically). The window manager package gets counted in popularity statistics even if it is never accessed. In the above chart Openbox has a relatively large share compared to Lumina. But Lumina uses Openbox as a dependency so all Lumina installs are probably also Openbox installs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnemmi · 2020-09-14 14:36 TWM is the default WM for xorg .. so, if you have xorg installed, TWM is installed as well. That's the minimal setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2020-09-14 14:56 I think this only applies if you have all of X.Org or specific pieces of X.Org installed. I have a minimal X.Org installed for various dependencies on two servers and neither has the TWM (x11-wm/twm) package installed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnemmi · 2020-09-14 15:06 I just checked. Xorg brings in xorg-apps (https://gitweb.dragonflybsd. org/dports.git/blob/HEAD:/x11/xorg/Makefile) and xorg-apps brings in TWM (https://gitweb.dragonflybsd.org/dports.git/blob/HEAD:/x11/xorg- apps/Makefile) .. " # These three are added for convenience purposes only. COMPONENTS+= x11-wm/twm:twm x11-clocks/xclock:xclock xinit xterm". Edit: deleted a line number ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2020-09-14 15:09 I just have pieces of X.Org installed. Stuff like xcb, xorg-macros, fonts, xorgproto. But not the core xorg or xorg-apps packages. Which is probably why I don't have twm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnemmi · 2020-09-14 15:13 Yeah .. I guess YMMV a lot here with the different types of installs depending on one's needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-09-14 17:59 I don't know if the script can differentiate between server or not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- qci · 2020-09-14 18:20 Hey! I know at least one more user who uses Xmonad! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vext01 · 2020-09-14 18:56 Ah so hardware.info is a script that's part of the install? Sorry, had no idea. And there's a keyboard shortcut to split the window in 2, tmux style. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bombshelter329 · 2020-09-14 23:49 No love for bspwm? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mcnst · 2020-09-15 03:44 tmux? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- truupe · 2020-09-22 16:51 No love for suckless dwm?
