rc.d belongs in libexec, not etc reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- northrupthebandgeek · 2020-08-24 18:58 Imagine thinking that code and configuration are mutually exclusive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noahpugsley · 2020-08-25 02:31 My crotchety UNIX(tm) beard says No! Never change anything! But he makes great points. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jmole · 2020-08-25 03:47 My friend sudo told me that init scripts are totally mutable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- euphraties247 · 2020-08-25 05:51 I remember when system binaries were in etc... On the surface I don’t like changes, but I can appreciate the desire to mount my operating system read only, and only leave config and scratch space writable... heck even config space should be a chore to “unlock”. The larger thing is that windows nt and the registry does this already and does it better. Linux is struggling with trying to make it more service oriented like nt with a messaging infrastructure that is literally tacked on, unlike NT and Mach. Should BSD stay firmly rooted in the past? Does it matter? This is where the fragmentation really kicks in ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2020-08-25 08:21 Good point, but `/etc/rc` should stay as a script that just invokes `/libexec/rc`. This is because after all, `/etc/rc` is configuration; it's the first program started by `init` and if you want to intercept the initialisation process or make your own custom init system, that's where you need to start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-08-25 12:29 Author makes some pretty good points, which I didn't even realize until I read this article. I hope his suggestions get implemented. Thanks for sharing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mcnst · 2020-08-25 13:37 Per a little Google, it seems like in HP-UX they already do put `init.d` inside `/sbin`, so, “it can be done”. https://old.reddit.com/r/NetBSD/comments/ifqvpl/rcd_belongs_in_libexec _not_etc/g2q6afc/ One big benefit of `/etc` is that you can’t miss `rc.d` presence; but this can probably be replicated by simply doing a symlink as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- techsnapp · 2020-08-26 15:09 Lobsters discussion [https://lobste.rs/s/wr7tie/rc\_d\_belongs\_libexec\_not\_etc](https:/ /lobste.rs/s/wr7tie/rc_d_belongs_libexec_not_etc)
