BSD hardware compatibility list reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Twe27ySeven · 2020-05-22 19:17 I'm not a BSD user (yet) but would like to help if I can. Does it need to be run on hardware or can I spin up a VM on all my computers and do the probe? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kernigh · 2020-05-22 20:10 Each VM has its own virtual hardware. This isn't the same as the real hardware, so the guest system doesn't use the same device drivers. If your real hardware can boot from USB, then you might install BSD on a USB stick. (You might need 2 sticks: 1 installer + 1 installed system. This would erase both sticks. You only need 1 stick if the installer can run from RAM and overwrite the stick.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BumpitySnook · 2020-05-22 22:48 For FreeBSD laptop hardware compatibility specifically, see also: https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wwolverrine · 2020-05-22 23:24 i am in. Btw what is the difference works and detected ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nahnah2017 · 2020-05-23 01:16 This is how rootkits get installed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jaypatelani · 2020-05-23 02:38 You might be able to use live usb like nomadbsd where you can install proble application. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxbuild · 2020-05-23 12:12 Yep, install [https://www.nomadbsd.org/download.html](https://www.noma dbsd.org/download.html) to the USB stick and probe all available computers. NomadBSD==FreeBSD in the terms of base system and drivers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxbuild · 2020-05-23 12:15 Works == Driver is found and passed simple operability test Detected == Driver is found, but not tested See [https://github.com/linuxhw/hw- probe#operability](https://github.com/linuxhw/hw-probe#operability) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aftli · 2020-05-23 16:39 Be careful: running this tool will publicize your entire `rc.conf` with all comments preserved, and no way to remove it yourself, which was entirely unexpected. I'm now waiting for them to remove it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxbuild · 2020-05-23 19:06 Fixed in master: [https://github.com/linuxhw/hw- probe/commits/master](https://github.com/linuxhw/hw- probe/commits/master) Your configs have been removed from the server. Thanks for reporting this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aftli · 2020-05-23 19:08 Great, I figured it was just an oversight as you're pretty good at hiding everything else. I'll go ahead and re-run it after awhile so the data remains helpful - I didn't have a problem with any of the other stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- laffer1 · 2020-05-26 17:24 I'm pretty excited about this project. There is some overlap with [bsdstats.org](https://bsdstats.org) but it's still quite useful. I've already submitted 4 of my systems. Very happy to see most of the \*BSD projects listed. (Missing MirBSD) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxbuild · 2020-05-26 18:48 \`rc.conf\` is not collected by default anymore. Not possible to anonymize it properly in general case.
