My new FreeBSD Laptop: Dell Latitude 7390 reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vivekkhera · 2020-05-22 01:53 Thanks for that article. You enabled some nice optimizations but I have to wonder how a mere mortal learns of these. Particularly how would I know to find the intel backlight package? I’ve been using bsd for millions of years (well, about 30) and FreeBSD for over 25 and I never came across the sysctl to disable waiting for usb to boot. I’ll be adding that to my servers too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joefarmer13 · 2020-05-22 01:56 Superb article, thanks very much. Gives me hope that one day my Dell 7559 will be happy with a BSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- perciva · 2020-05-22 01:58 Details like that are one of the reasons I wrote that blog post. I suspect that the majority of FreeBSD desktop users are unaware of some or all of * Using lagg to autoswitch between wired and wireless networks * How to use device hints to get speaker-headphone switching working * CPU microcode updates * autoboot delay and usb wait * All three bits needed to get a webcam working * The intel-backlight utility Hopefully after this blog post more people will be aware of all of these. ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vivekkhera · 2020-05-22 04:14 Exactly! Thanks for sharing. I’d love to see some of this make it back to the handbook, especially magic codes like the speaker headphone trick. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shawn_webb · 2020-05-22 13:39 My work laptop, a Dell Precision 7540, came in last week. I promptly installed HardenedBSD on it. The wireless card isn't detected, but I didn't plan on using wireless on this beast, anyways. Intel Xeon 8c/16t, 64GB ECC RAM, 1TB NVMe, discrete NVIDIA card. Running dual-monitor right now. It's the best system I use on a daily basis now. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- perciva · 2020-05-22 16:29 Some of it is in the handbook -- the configuration for lagg I copied almost line for line out of there. The speaker/headphone trick is hard because the headphones will have different `nid` numbers and the speakers will have different `as` numbers on different systems. I considered explaining how to dump the sound device configuration to figure out the right numbers but that would have been a blog post all by itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2020-05-23 08:43 Nice article ! I had also some “rage quit” at the beginning of the transition to FreeBSD, where I needed some configuration, WiFi settings, boot loader settings, ... into everything worked. But after the hassle and the time spent on it, it really runs well and is rock stable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2020-05-23 08:53 Nice ! Had you troubles with optimus ? How is battery life ? Dell is probably a good bet for FreeBSD/HBSD I think, since they are working with the open source community 👍🏻 Their are rumours for upcoming 7550 and 7750, I’m curious what improvements they will bring ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avgapon · 2020-05-25 08:11 Very nice. I recently went through similar steps with a new laptop.
