Project Trident moving on from FreeBSD to a different OS reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden 路 2019-10-13 05:05 Seems they have chosen Void Linux: [https://github.com/project-trident/trident- installer/commits/master/src-sh/void-install- zfs.sh](https://github.com/project-trident/trident- installer/commits/master/src-sh/void-install-zfs.sh) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2019-10-13 05:20 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- claudiom 路 2019-10-13 13:07 Hmm. Project Trident, but without SystemD. "P.T.S.D." Sounds about right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch 路 2019-10-13 13:09 馃槀馃槀馃槀馃槀馃槀 I literally erupted in laughter from this. Good one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VENTDEV 路 2019-10-13 16:22 As I said over at /r/freebsd: IX, the only company with greater ADHD than Alphabet. My money is on them renaming Project Trident to Penguin Feet and becoming a Lumina Ubuntu Fork within the next 3 years. Then they'll rename the project and change direction again shortly after that... Edit: As an aside, who the hell uses Telegram for an opensource project? That alone makes me want to say good riddance. IRC people. IRC... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin 路 2019-10-13 19:00 This is odd since Void already has desktop editions. One of the criteria was to find a base without desktop spins. That being said, I like Void as a choice. It's rolling, lightweight, could use more desktop polish, has a very BSD style approach to start- up and service management. I'd be open to running Lumina on a Void base. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rehcla 路 2019-10-14 18:29 PCBSD --> TrueOS --> Project Trident --> ? As soon you get used to it and the user base is stable, these guys change something fundamental! Maybe they should call it SHIVA-OS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch 路 2019-10-14 18:36 > PCBSD --> TrueOS This was iX systems. Everything after TrueOS is an independent effort. > these guys change something fundamental! I think the problem here is upstream FreeBSD is unresponsive to downstream needs (see the links in the OP.) Of course, knowing the typical "Unix guy" mentality the reasoning on FreeBSD's end is probably that that's the downstream project's problem. Fair enough, but with BSD as a whole suffering from a manpower shortage to begin with, why would they discourage folks from using or contributing to the project? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rehcla 路 2019-10-14 18:42 You know, I did like TrueOS and it was also popular in the OSS- Community... Nr.10 on Distrowatch!!! And then change the brand? And now change the underlying OS? Linux??? Oh, we really need a new Linux distro!!! I hope this is nonsense and they use OpenIndiana! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch 路 2019-10-14 18:58 > And then change the brand? TrueOS is a registered trademark of iX Systems. Trident - which is not legally affiliated with iX - couldn't legally use it. Also, Trident and TrueOS are separate projects that share a build system. They are not the same OS. This should be pretty obvious. > And now change the underlying OS? The FreeBSD base's non-server hardware support is terrible, especially for new hardware like GPUs or even WiFi adapters. This effectively made Trident useless on high end workstations and laptops. > Oh, we really need a new Linux distro Void Linux could do with a DE, and that's where Trident comes in. > OpenIndiana I *highly* doubt Illumos has better hardware support than FreeBSD, much less Linux. Hell, OI recently had to disable SSD trim because it wasn't working properly on some drives. Yikes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rehcla 路 2019-10-14 19:13 At a rational and technical base everything you say makes prefect sense, but I doubt strongly that all this decisions had a healthy impact on the community around PCBSD, TrueOS and Project Trident. And I am sure the people who worship the "FreeBSD Desktop" will be "very happy" with moving to Linux... There is GhostBSD, but wait, it also switched... Dont get me wrong, I just see it from a more emotional perspective of a person what uses BSD cause I love UNIX ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch 路 2019-10-14 19:49 > all this decisions had a healthy impact on the community around PCBSD, TrueOS and Project Trident It is what it is; a lot of what happened is no one's fault. Just competing demands and attempted downstream blends and compromises that weren't sustainable. The only thing I blame anyone for is iX Systems for nuking the TrueOS Discourse, which contained most of the tribal knowledge about the OS. This is especially the case since TrueOS' own documentation is terribly lacking. > the "FreeBSD Desktop" will be "very happy" with moving to Linux I'll be moving to GhostBSD as I already run Debian and Ubuntu and don't need yet another Linux installation right now. > person what uses BSD cause I love UNIX There's a lot of stuff FreeBSD does better than Linux, most notably - in my experience - crontab and documentation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rehcla 路 2019-10-14 21:07 >The only thing I blame anyone for is iX Systems for nuking the TrueOS Discourse, which contained most of the tribal knowledge about the OS. Me and another nice user named MER wrote a **step by step HOWTO** about adding a second disk as /home on a zfs installation there.
