FreeBSD Meets Linux At The Open Source Summit reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AskJeevesIsBest · 2019-08-26 00:36 This seems cool. I think Linux people and BSD people should converse more often, and maybe collaborate on open source projects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shawn_webb · 2019-08-26 13:03 I'm hoping that after my vBSDcon presentation, the BSDs will finally start working together regarding security issues. I would love for FreeBSD to contribute. I'm putting in the infrastructure needed for a BSD security working group right now, in fact. More details will come at vBSDcon. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sehnsuchtbsd · 2019-08-27 13:40 And I think I speak for the majority of people here when I say I'm extremely thankful for your contribution ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-08-29 08:17 IKR, but the hardcore linuxers have this hangup about their GNU licences vs BSD and it's really petty. Also the prevailing attitude by Linux fans that they still remember the BSD of tens years ago being a little unstable and unpolished, neglecting what we have today. They act like Linux is so far in future because of it's graphical capabilities and performance benchmarks when Linux has issues and problems too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-08-29 08:22 My impression with FreeBSD is that they make it possible to secure your machine, but they have a "gentoo" like approach were they leave it up to the user to do the work to harden. Whereas OpenBSD and HardenedBSD set out to deploy it hardened out of box. FreeBSD is useful for those that are using legacy hardware and may need to scale down security for stability or performance reasons. As an OpenBSD user I would like to be able to fine tune security to squeeze performance because some design decisions may not apply to my use case. \* Edit - Didn't realize I'm talking to project leader of HardenedBSD, of course you know this duh. Love your work! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AskJeevesIsBest · 2019-08-29 16:56 The way I see it, there shouldn’t be any conflict about which license is better. Both are in favor of open source software, and we should encourage the use of both based on the needs of the software developers making software and licensing it. I also think that Linux people should be happy that there is another Unix like option to choose from. Having options is good for computer users of all kinds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0x3639 · 2019-09-19 12:26 Exactly. This is what the open source community should be all about. We can't have infighting and bickering about who's OS is better, we should all just get along and work together (easier said than done, I know). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AskJeevesIsBest · 2019-09-19 13:33 Yeah, it’ll take a lot of hard work to get both Linux and BSD communities to be mostly friendly with each other. But I think it’s achievable. I’ve been asking questions about BSD in their sub Reddit’s, and everyone seems very friendly, even if you mention that you’re a Linux user.
