BSD on Raspberry pi reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DirkJR · 2019-07-20 19:23 It's is possible to setup BSD on Raspberry pi headless, without keyboard an monitor? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PitifulView · 2019-07-20 19:56 Yes. For netbsd you need to use -current [arm64.img](https://nycdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD- daily/HEAD/latest/evbarm-aarch64/binary/gzimg/arm64.img.gz). Gunzip this file and dd to a uSD card. To configure so you can ssh, mount the MSDOS partition and add a file called creds.txt containing ```useradd yourusername yourpassword```. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2019-07-20 21:52 Depends on the BSD flavour. There is no single BSD and no instructions will be correct for all of them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnabre · 2019-07-21 01:41 FreeBSD runs fine on the Raspberry Pi. [FreeBSD Wiki:arm/Raspberry Pi](https://wiki.freebsd.org/FreeBSD/arm/Raspberry%20Pi) [Pre-built FreeBSD images, called RaspBSD](http://www.raspbsd.org/) Pretty much anything that will run on a Raspberry Pi can be run with a just serial terminal (which you don't need connected to run the system). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-22 20:39 I run headless NetBSD on raspberry pi zeros’s. I connect via console ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DirkJR · 2019-07-23 11:00 Thank you all for the answers, but I thought something like SSH on Linux if it's possible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2019-07-24 14:51 Might depend on the generation of RPi you have. Some older ones have an ARMv7 CPU while newer ones have an ARMv8 processor. As best I can tell, OpenBSD's RPi build only runs on ARMv8. I've run FreeBSD on my ARMv7 RPi here. I haven't tried NetBSD on it yet but understand that it works on the v7 too. But for each of the BSDs, it should be as simple as downloading the SD disk-image file (usually a "`.img`" or "`.fs`") and writing it to your SD card with `dd if=bsd.fs of=/dev/${SDCARD} bs=1M` (device-name and source filename will change depending on the OS you're using to write the card) That said, the OS should make less of a difference compared to the applications you choose to run, mostly because RAM is your tightest resource. It should have plenty of horsepower for light serving (a small database + web server + web app, or a file/gopher/mail/git server, or a VPN, etc) or SSHing into for CLI apps. If you're using FreeBSD, the use of ZFS might depend on how much RAM your RPi has. If it's 1GB+, then as long as you don't enable deduplication (off by default anyway), you should be good; with one of the 512MB or 256MB models, you'd likely be better off with UFS unless you want to do some hand-tuning to get ZFS to play nicely with a low- RAM machine, [particularly setting `vfs.zfs.arc_min` and `vfs.zfs.arc_max` in your `/boot/loader.conf` and `kern.maxvnodes` in your `/etc/sysctl.conf`](https://twitter.com/vermaden/status/114313565 1874988033) as recommended to me by /u/vermaden. I have an ancient machine with 320MB of RAM and a 800MHz i386 Celeron processor that runs OpenBSD quite nicely. It's a little sluggish but serves some static HTTP (with the native `httpd` server), some mail experimenting, as well as a little bit of dev experimentation (`tmux` and `vi`/`vim`/`ed`, usually writing Python3 code) and it runs fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2019-07-24 14:52 Curious if you have a Pi ZeroW, and if so, if you have the wireless working. I've had my eye on one but last I checked (at least Open/FreeBSD) the wifi wasn't supported. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2019-07-24 15:18 I wouldn't recommend RaspBSD, it has't been updated in a couple of years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-24 15:38 No, I was using the cheap one ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden · 2019-07-24 15:52 I have run FreeBSD 11.x on RPI2B for years with ZFS/GELI with only POWER (USB) and LAN (RJ45) attached. I did not do anything special, just used the official images for RPI2 from FreeBSD - available here: [https://download.freebsd.org/ftp/releases/ISO- IMAGES/11.3/FreeBSD-11.3-RELEASE-arm- armv6-RPI2.img.xz](https://download.freebsd.org/ftp/releases/ISO- IMAGES/11.3/FreeBSD-11.3-RELEASE-arm-armv6-RPI2.img.xz) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2019-07-25 19:48 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mr_clicky_keys · 2019-07-25 23:13 For OpenBSD the only one that currently works is the Raspberry Pi 3 and video out isn't supported, you have to connect over serial console. Older versions won't be supported because of the requirement of binary kernel drivers, but support for the Pi 4 might be added eventually.
