I have a Sun Ultra 40, with 2 processor, 12GB ram, Nvidia GT 710, and dual HP pro 700 SSD. I want to run NetBSD, I do not like oracle Solaris. Currently I have Ubuntu and Debian 10 installed. I am having trouble with it booting from USB, or DVD, this is the same with NetBSD and FreeBSD, any idea? reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-07-14 18:25 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-07-14 20:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-14 20:08 System is amd64, I will look into it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icantthinkofone · 2019-07-15 02:00 Sounds like USB and DVD are broke. You're welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-15 02:05 No, I can install Linux from usb and dvd no problem ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icantthinkofone · 2019-07-15 02:07 That's not what your title says but I guess you can't edit that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-15 02:08 My bad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-15 02:09 Maybe it is how I copy over the usb image to flash using etcher, or dd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- parrotnine · 2019-07-15 02:46 Just out of curiosity, why don't you like Solaris? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- munocat · 2019-07-15 02:52 I love Solaris, just not oracle Solaris. The base installation does not include GUI. Installed following oracles docks. The GUI does not recognize the Nvidia drivers nor the sun LCD monitor. Just seems like there is no love from oracle about putting a good os together. The developer tools are difficult to install. There is not much help, or information nor much information on google. I have 2 ultra 60’s max out, and an lx. So I am doing well with Solaris 8 and 2.51. For some reason with NetBSD, FreeBSD or hipster (open Solaris) I can get any of the usb I ages to work. I am dd or etcher them from and Ubuntu 18.04 system. Don’t know what I am doing wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johnklos · 2019-07-15 10:55 How'd Sun decide to sell x86 systems under the "Ultra" name, when the name is so directly connected to UltraSPARC? Oh, well. NetBSD runs perfectly on my Sun Fire v245 (dual UltraSPARC, 16 gigs, hardware RAID - nice, and was fairly cheap). So far, I haven't seen an x86 system that won't run NetBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WillTheGator · 2019-07-16 04:46 How'd you make the USB drive
