A few questions from someone who used Linux reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-03-19 01:19 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flexibeast · 2019-03-19 02:44 In terms of Steam on OpenBSD, [here's an /r/openbsd discussion thread from several months back](https://www.reddit.com/r/openbsd/comments/9b 24bf/would_it_be_possible_run_steam_games_on_openbsd/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rushsteve1 · 2019-03-19 03:15 In order: - No. Even on the off chance you got Steam to run somehow it would have many many problems. - Probably fine, that's standard hardware. - Free if you just want to use, Open if you actually want to learn. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VENTDEV · 2019-03-19 04:20 1. You'd run Steam in WINE. Expect similar results to running Steam in WINE on Linux. 2. You should be more specific about your hardware as a 2.1GHz Pentium with Integrated graphics could be many different machines made in the last 25 years. But in general, as long as you have common hardware that is not the latest and greatest, it should work. 3. FreeBSD is for general use. OpenBSD is for security evangelist. The former you would be able to run Steam on via WINE. The later you won't be able to due to their motivations/focus. If you have to ask these sorts of questions, you'd probably be better off on our equivalent of Noobuntu. You'll want to give TrueOS or GhostBSD a look. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-03-19 05:10 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cHy40444 · 2019-03-19 05:14 XD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thfrw · 2019-03-19 07:50 Check out www.playonbsd.com/shopping_guide/ for a list of commercial games that generally run on OpenBSD. Don't expect easy setup with a graphical library like Steam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illumosguy · 2019-03-19 14:07 > - No. Even on the off chance you got Steam to run somehow it would have many many problems only true to an extent; in fact, while it's impossible to run Steam on OpenBSD, wine on FreeBSD improved considerably in the last 2 years, and there's many Steam games actually running just fine on it (when was the last time you tried, if ever?). Wine wrappers from emulators/PlayOnBSD can ease the task a lot > - Free if you just want to use, Open if you actually want to learn. mmm, this sounds very opinionated; there's plenty of good and useful stuff to learn any BSD. Actually, learning ZFS by using FreeBSD is alone an extremely valuable opportunity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illumosguy · 2019-03-19 14:10 asking for gaming support is noobish? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2019-03-19 15:25 You may be able to run the Windows version of Steam on FreeBSD, but you won't be able to run the Linux version of Steam. And you will be limited to Windows games, Linux titles won't work. For a beginner, I recommend GhostBSD. It's FreeBSD with the desktop already set up for you and graphical package management. It'll greatly ease the transition if you're coming from Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VENTDEV · 2019-03-19 15:45 The sum of the questions leads me to believe he'll have a tough time installing FreeBSD and/or OpenBSD. Then an additional tough time maintaining said OSs. Our prepackaged OSs will be more close to what he's probably using on Linux. So no, asking about gaming is not noobish. Not doing basic research via a search engine is. How he formulates the questions is. And the content of the questions is. There is nothing wrong with being a noob. There is stuff wrong with Noobuntu though. Which is why I insult it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- calrogman · 2019-03-19 19:34 I think you'd have a hard time finding somebody who has difficulty installing OpenBSD. The installer is so simple you could go through it accidentally while wearing a blindfold. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VENTDEV · 2019-03-19 20:03 How is the post installation setup process? Especially for someone whose primary question was playing Steam games... :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- calrogman · 2019-03-19 20:05 I am unabashed on this point. Somebody who wants to play Steam games should be installing either Windows or Ubuntu LTS. OS supremacy is for losers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beowuff · 2019-03-20 00:45 No soup for you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oroadmedborgare · 2019-03-22 16:59 Nethack works, who needs other games? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prec3r · 2019-03-31 07:41 Install Emacs xD
