x270 WM help reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 01:15 I have been trying to get *BSD on my laptop, x270. Any tutorial, article, blog posts specifically refer to `drm-next-kmod` and are pretty old. The newest post I have found was someone referring to getting up and running on 12-CURRENT. varmenden.wordpress.com has a great tutorial, if you have a x220, but still refers to a now, non- existent `drm-NEXT-kmod` does anyone have a working x270 with *BSD (preferably Free|OpenBSD) and a DE? *edit 1*- correction on `drm` package name *edit 2*- reinstalled FBSD, ran `pkg install --yes drm-kmod` edited `/etc/rc.conf` added `kld_list="/boot/modules/i915kms.ko"` added `exec dwm` in `.xinitrc` installed `dwm` reboot and no x11, ran `dwm` after CLI login and got `dwm: cannot open display` # edit 3 solved after installing the correct drivers I simply needed to run `startx` to start x11. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antirawker · 2019-02-17 01:21 I'm running OpenBSD on a x250 using DWM. Installation and setup was very straightforward. OpenBSDs thinkpad support is top notch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 01:40 what version of OpenBSD? I tried... 6.4 I believe, but had no trackpad or nub working. nor could I `tab` into the login dialog box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b6s6d6 · 2019-02-17 02:04 Well, I can assure you that a [drm- kmod](https://www.freshports.org/graphics/drm-kmod/) port does in fact exist in FreeBSD and it automatically installs the appropriate driver version for you. I have it installed on my very own laptop running FreeBSD-12.0-RELEASE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 02:13 correction `drm-next-kmod` as mentinoed in tutorials does not show up when I run `pkg search drm-` several show up, and have tried all but `legacy` and `11` which deletes the previously installed one when installing a new one. from /usr/ports or binary install with `pkg install`? could you share your /etc/rc.conf? the line something like kld_list="/boot/i915.ko" aside from that idk what else I would need to configure to get a WM up and running (aside from xorg) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b6s6d6 · 2019-02-17 03:01 What FreeBSD version are you using? The linuxkpi support only works on 11.2-RELEASE and higher. `drm-next-kmod` indeed doesn't exist anymore. It's been superseded by `drm-kmod` which actually is a metaport that decides what's the better drm driver to install. You just do: `sudo pkg install drm-kmod` and `sudo sysrc kld_list+="/boot/modules/i915kms.ko"` I'm using the 'latest' pkg repo but think it should be available in the 'quarterly' repo as well. BTW drm-legacy-kmod is just the oldest of them all and is the least feasible solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 03:10 I am on 12-RELEASE logged in as root I ran `pkg install drm-kmod-*-20181120` I do not recall the exact pkg name as I have been distro hopping all day. then `vim /etc/rc.conf` add # KERNEL MODULES kld_list="${kld_list} i915kms" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antirawker · 2019-02-17 05:38 was using 6.3 and upgraded to 6.4 when it became available. make sure to do the firmware update (fw_update) during the install process. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reptarju · 2019-02-17 09:26 the package names changed in the 12 release. Consolidation of the old, consolidation of the new, retained various versions to make it confusing. there is a drm-kmod meta pkg/port, that installs the correct one based on the version of freebsd your running. with an x270 you should avoid legacy-drm how about a startx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 09:32 ehh no clue about startx I have only installed `drm-kmod` via `pkg install`, and edited `/etc/rc.conf` to add the `kld_list` line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reptarju · 2019-02-17 09:34 execute startx to start Xorg running as root or user changes how it works ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 09:45 well whaddya know, it fucking works! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reptarju · 2019-02-17 09:48 congratulations, you did a thing. i was having a reaccuring issue. i kept trying to load the kernels i915 vs module i915. took me forever to catch it. dwm is pretty awesome, enjoy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 10:12 ok one last thing, where tf is the `config.c` file for dwm in FreeBSD? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reptarju · 2019-02-17 10:17 depends on how you installed it pkg info -l dwm L for list or work in the port dir https://www.freshports.org/x11-wm/dwm/ per the above link, /usr/ports/x11-wm/dwm/ you can clone the git, but youll have to change library pointers to BSDify the make file. memorize apropos ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-17 11:24 thanks did `pkg install` git from suckless.org and chmod +x did nothing, then again I did not `startx` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reptarju · 2019-02-17 15:03 you have to compile it. dir with the make file; make clean install once you get the first compile working, its a superfast loop to make changes, let me know if you cant get the library thing setup properly and ill look at it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THEdirtyDotterFUCKr · 2019-02-18 01:03 Ran `pkg info -l dwm` and got a list of folders, none of which have `config.c` to edit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reptarju · 2019-02-18 03:33 youll have to wait a day till i can wake and play. feel free to message me if no one replys
