Newcomer to FreeBSD reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lemonizer96 · 2019-01-11 22:57 Hi everyone! I am a new user of FreeBSD and BSD in general , but i have used linux for a long time (since 2010) and i gotta say i am loving FreeBSD 12.0 release right now ! It is a beast on my machine :) i have zfs on it and got xfce working as well :D i think the only issue i got right now is the boot time is slow because at the beginning of boot it says "shortening read at *address* to *address*. It does this like 3 or 4 times then gives me a gptzfsboot error 128 like 2 times as well but then after that it boots fine :) i have no clue on what those warnings or errors are as this is a fresh install. But it doesn't seem to affect my install in any way i can tell. My experience so far has been really good :) i hope everyone's day has been good :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Y3808 · 2019-01-11 23:57 Are you booting from a RAID array of some sort? The boot loader doesn't need to be on all of those disks, just the first one to load the ZFS kernel module, but it may be trying all of them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lemonizer96 · 2019-01-12 00:26 I did a basic install on zfs with one drive and it seems to have disappeared now like magic lol. Thank you for your comment :) have you had any slow downs with pkg ? I have 150Mbps comcast and with pkg i get like 200-400Kbps download :/ i live in the east of usa so pkg0.nyi.freebsd.org is probably fastest mirror for me but those are the speeds im getting from it. Thats my only other issue now lol i mean its ok but i wish i couls get at least 2MB/s lol. If you know anything how to fix this it would be much appreciated :) also i noticed that when installing a large package thats bigger than 10MB i see when it starts it starts at 6MB/s which is my speed range but then it instantly dips to 300Kbps :/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Y3808 · 2019-01-12 00:45 As for pkg download speed, they all go through a CDN. Ports fetch from the source code host of record for the port, so can vary. Try disabling ipv6, that seems to be a common recommendation with pkg repos. You can do it on the fly with -4... pkg -4 install (thing) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-01-12 14:56 >shortening read at *address* to *address* What’s happened is your operating system started out with an IPv6 address that is 8 fields of four digits, like this. "*fe80:0000:0000:0000:2000:0xfoo:foo1:bar1",* then it applied a couple of IPv6 address shortening rules. If you don't want to use ipv6, just remove it from your rc.conf # Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol ifconfig_re0="DHCP" ifconfig_ue0="SYNCDHCP" .... # Statically Assigned ifconfig_re0="inet 192.168.xxx.xxx netmask 255.255.xxx.x" defaultrouter="192.168.x.x" ..... Set name servers accordingly :) I am new to FreeBSD too. (1 month or so) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2019-01-14 10:38 But still, it's so slow. Tops at 3Mb/s (on a 500Mbit fiber)
