Help: Laptop refuses to boot from GhostBSD installation USB stick reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch · 2018-12-26 08:46 **UPDATE:** I fixed the problem by downloading Trident (TrueOS' successor), changing the extension from .iso to .img, and then using Win32DiskImager to write it to the USB stick. Finally, I disabled Secure Boot, switched the boot mode from UEFI to legacy, and moved External Device to the top of the boot order in the BIOS. Laptop: Sony Vaio Fit 15E, 3rd Gen Intel Core i3, running Windows 10 v1809 Slow Ring. Secure Boot and UEFI disabled, External Device set to the top of boot order in BIOS. I've tried both the official GhostBSD installation USB creation instructions and using Rufus for that purpose. I've even swapped out the HDD for a completely unallocated SSD. In each case, the laptop pulses the USB disk LED for a bit, and then boots into Windows Installation. Typically my difficulties with 3rd party desktop OSes begin after installation, so this doesn't seem to be going very well so far :'( Any ideas? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2018-12-26 11:10 Which image did you copy to the USB drive? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch · 2018-12-26 16:14 The GhostBSD ISO file from the official download page. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2018-12-26 16:30 Use the memstick file. This one is likely only for optical media. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch · 2018-12-26 16:32 What memstick file? The ISO is the only download available and the installation wiki doesn't mention anything else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUZxxl · 2018-12-26 16:51 I see. Perhaps my guess was wrong. How did you copy the image to your USB drive? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch · 2018-12-26 17:05 I followed the **On Windows** instructions here: https://wiki.ghostbsd.org/index.php/Pre-installation_Tasks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdrch · 2018-12-26 17:13 Well, update: I tried renaming the ISO to IMG and using the wiki instructions I linked to earlier, but now I get read errors from the USB stick 🤦‍♂️
