Linux and FreeBSD networking reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icantthinkofone · 2018-11-13 13:24 > Often I read statements about the FreeBSD networking stack being faster and more mature than the Linux counterpart, but I didn’t find any comparative tests between the two OS Completely ignoring the published tests by Netflix. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- recourse7 · 2018-11-13 17:44 netgate - the makers of pfsense are moving to linux because of dpdk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-11-13 21:36 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- X-Istence · 2018-11-13 21:42 This is incorrect. DPDK also runs on FreeBSD, and indeed Netgate here specifies they want to build on top of that on FreeBSD: https://www.netgate.com/blog/further-a-roadmap-for-pfsense.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- recourse7 · 2018-11-13 21:46 Well PfSense 3.0 will NOT be based on Freebsd. https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/6upchy/can_a_bsd_system_r eplicate_the_performance_of/dlvmkdu/ Note the reply by Gonzopancho saying that No they will not be using FreeBSD. From this thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/6upchy /can_a_bsd_system_replicate_the_performance_of/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mgladiethor · 2018-11-14 02:05 Nice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daemonpenguin · 2018-11-14 15:58 Odd because he links to a roadmap which specifically says PfSense 3.0 will be based on FreeBSD. and that they plan to make it so pfSense can be added as a package to a vanilla FreeBSD system. https://www.netgate.com/blog/further-a-roadmap-for-pfsense.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- recourse7 · 2018-11-14 16:05 I agree it is odd. I think its just an old roadmap and over the last 3 years their plans have changed do to VPP and DPDK on linux. It hasn't been super easy to find what is really going on with pfsense/netgate and freebsd but as far as I can tell from their postings on /r/PFSENSE and /r/Netgate that they are moving to linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2018-11-16 21:49 There is always opensense if you really want to use FreeBSD as your router. But it would be too bad if pfsense would move to Linux.
