Just installed Dragonfly BSD on my desktop, did I brick my hard drive? reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChetMustang · 2018-08-18 19:31 After installing Dragonfly BSD my computer is stuck at the start up screen, did I brick my hard drive somehow? And I can't access the boot menu or bios settings everything works fine on the other hard drives (the ones without dragonfly BSD installed) https://i.redd.it/z638blnflwg11.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-08-18 19:42 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChetMustang · 2018-08-18 20:06 if I unplug the hard drive, everything is fine, it's literally when that hard drive is plugged in, it freezes on that screen, I also tested it on another hard drive with the same operating system and the same thing happened. even having the cd or any other booting cd doesn't seem to work. Haven't tried a utility usb though ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johnklos · 2018-08-18 20:24 Go in to your BIOS settings and turn off the full screen logo option so you can see what's going on. No, you didn't brick your hard drive. The bootloader on it is probably borked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-08-18 20:40 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2018-08-18 21:30 I have a similar system, it's a firmware bug most likely - it also hanged with an OpenBSD disk. removed it, everything was fine what system are you running on? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-08-18 22:24 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChetMustang · 2018-08-19 00:54 an emachines w3622, it's been upgraded to max ran (2 gb) and I switched out the intel celeron with a pentium D 935. also have a geforce 210 for the graphics card. as for the os I believe I made a disc of dragonfly BSD 5.2.2, it should be the one you get from the website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2018-08-19 03:12 the machine I had trouble with was a similar Pentium D system; SiS chipset? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icantthinkofone · 2018-08-19 09:40 In all my decades of designing and building computer systems, I have never, EVER had a problem with cables breaking on their own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-08-19 09:48 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icantthinkofone · 2018-08-19 09:52 Then you work on shit systems. And I've been designing systems from scratch at the TTL level since 1980. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-08-19 09:53 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icantthinkofone · 2018-08-19 09:55 I'm not. I'm warning others to ignore your advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- qci · 2018-08-19 11:20 The BIOS/firmware bugs are quite common. I've had cases where BIOSes hung until I detached the hard drive. Worst thing can happen is if you need to open a laptop to get it to boot and you need to find a good BIOS to erase the drive in some other hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChetMustang · 2018-08-19 12:54 Intel 945gc express? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LinuxLeafFan · 2018-08-20 22:34 oman?
