FreeBSD 10.4-RC1 with Xfce4 help reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jsalpha2 · 2017-09-19 17:10 Trying to install in virtualbox for the last few days. Install takes me to a command line, then # pkg update # pkg install xorg # pkg install xfce what else do I need before startx brings me to the desktop? I have followed the install directions from a bunch of sites (some outdated) and tried editing /boot/loader.conf and % echo "exec /usr/local/bin/startxfce4 --with-ck-launch" > ~/.xinitrc. I've tried installing slim or lightdm. All I get is errors. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pavetheway91 · 2017-09-19 21:05 1. Make sure virtualbox-ose-additions, xinit, xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard are installed 3. Make sure ~/.xinitrx is executable 4. Call xinit instead of startx If still doesn't work, what kind of errors are you getting? But why 10 instead of 11? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jsalpha2 · 2017-09-19 21:28 Oops, thought 10.4 RC1 was the newest, 11.1 is older. Your point #2..how? is that the echo command from above. I'm trying to install the 64bit version. Will try again tomorrow. Only error I sort of remember is about .Xauthority, If I have more, I will report back. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neel1337 · 2017-09-19 22:26 You should also make sure `dbus_enable="YES"` is in your `/etc/rc.conf` and that dbus is loaded. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neel1337 · 2017-09-19 22:28 Even though 10.4 may be newer than 11.1, 10.4 is part of an older branch. It's more if you already have a FreeBSD 10.x server and don't want to immediately upgrade to 11.x (or are skipping it) than if you have a desktop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antenore · 2017-09-20 06:28 > I have followed the install directions from a bunch of sites (some outdated). Why? Just follow the FreeBSD handbook and you are good to go. As has been pointed out, install a new fresh copy of FreeBSD 11 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jsalpha2 · 2017-09-20 14:06 Thanks, my old computer running Win 7 now has the newest FreeBSD running in VirtualBox. It is even running full screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ctisred · 2017-09-23 20:38 them errors are useful. do the posting.
