AMD RX 480 Support? reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nvidiaspy · 2017-09-15 02:48 Does anyone run a 480 on any BSD? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-15 09:15 Yes. FreeBSD 12-CURRENT + [drm-next- kmod](https://www.freshports.org/graphics/drm-next-kmod) + [temporary workaround for the EFI framebuffer issue](https://github.com/FreeBSDDesktop/freebsd-base- graphics/issues/170) (`hw.syscons.disable=1`). Even Vulkan and Wayland work :) [My ports fork](https://github.com/myfreeweb/freebsd-ports-dank) has some Vulkan stuff merged in, you can play `games/vkquake` :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nvidiaspy · 2017-09-15 13:07 That's great to hear!!! Would you mind sharing how to set hw.syscons.disable to 1? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-15 16:32 uhh add `hw.syscons.disable=1` to `/boot/loader.conf` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nvidiaspy · 2017-09-15 20:11 You rock man thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nvidiaspy · 2017-09-15 23:06 Do I still need xf86-video-ati? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-15 23:57 No! `ati` is some really old stuff! You have two DDX choices. `modesetting` and `amdgpu`. They're pretty much the same (both use [Glamor](https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/Glamor/)) but `modesettings` tends to have some diagonal screen tearing, while `amdgpu` doesn't :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_love_conditions · 2017-09-20 17:49 I did this and I get really bad screen-fucked-upness. Like it will get to the welcome to Freebsd screen and from then on losses it's shit. Can I fix it? I have a r9 290 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_love_conditions · 2017-09-20 19:38 how would one go about playing vkquake ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-20 21:08 You mean after the boot loader? Yes, you turned off the console, you'll see colorful glitches instead of it :D but then the driver should load. Looks like it doesn't. Maybe it's `radeonkms` instead of `amdgpu` for the 290? For now try without `hw.syscons.disable=1` — type `unset hw.syscons.disable` in the bootloader after pressing Esc. And read the messages as it boots. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_love_conditions · 2017-09-20 21:17 the thing is i went through the list of amdgpu modules in /boot/modules and hawaii is straight up not there, supported architectures under amdgpu in drm-next-kmod are: carrizo fiji polaris stoney topaz tonga vega What is more interesting is that i have to use xf86-video-ati along with radeonkms. I might go on github and ask for hawaii support ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-21 06:43 Yeah, AMD devs are working on supporting older cards in amdgpu, but it's still a work in progress, use radeonkms for now. I think RADV should work with radeonkms just fine?? I guess ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_love_conditions · 2017-09-21 08:46 what is radv exctly? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-21 10:25 uhh the vulkan driver ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_love_conditions · 2017-09-21 10:39 How would I go about getting it , is it in ports? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2017-09-21 15:35 In [my fork of ports](https://github.com/myfreeweb/freebsd-ports-dank) (or manually apply [this](https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=220982), [this](https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=221540), [this](https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=222175)). Build `graphics/mesa-dri` (and `mesa-libs`) then `graphics/vulkan-sdk` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-03-05 05:11 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2018-03-05 13:30 Weird. Where are you setting it? (Should be /boot/loader.conf, you should get no console (splash screen in TrueOS?) output until the driver loads.) Also amdgpu should be in kld_list in /etc/rc.conf otherwise the driver wouldn't load automatically, but TrueOS probably already has that set maybe. If that fails, you can switch to legacy BIOS boot (CSM). As much as I hate it, it doesn't have that problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-03-06 10:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- floatboth · 2018-03-06 10:57 OHHHH WAIT. TrueOS uses GRUB2 instead of the FreeBSD boot loader, right? Then it's not `/boot/loader.conf`, it's some grub config thingy.OHHHH WAIT. TrueOS uses GRUB2 instead of the FreeBSD boot loader, right?
