FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE is out reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thompsa · 2012-01-12 21:09 The announcement has the download links, http://www.freebsd.org/releases/9.0R/announce.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- perciva · 2012-01-12 21:49 EC2 AMIs are available, too: http://www.daemonology.net/freebsd-on- ec2/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oiwot · 2012-01-12 23:58 Fantastic, thanks to all involved. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chronophage · 2012-01-13 02:02 Just upgraded, mergemaster time! Yay! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-13 03:21 any chance of seeing these bad boys on more instance types, like m1.small? thanks for all the work you've done brining freebsd to ec2! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tim_M · 2012-01-13 06:09 > [powerpc] FreeBSD/powerpc now supports Sony Playstation 3 using the OtherOS feature available on firmwares 3.15 and **earlier** Fuck Sony ---------------------------------------------------------------------- perciva · 2012-01-13 07:51 Working on it. There are technical issues right now which I'm hoping to get resolved in the near future. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-13 08:45 that's awesome to hear you're working on it. IIRC, tarsnap gives you no economic reason to do so. i'm down to help, but i have no experience contributing to the freebsd project. i'm pretty apt, so if you or anyone else can take me "under their wing", i have about 5 hours a week i can promise to it. PM if interested (anyone, not just colin) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- perciva · 2012-01-13 09:23 Tarsnap sort of gives me an economic reason. I'm happy that Tarsnap can now use FreeBSD on EC2, but I'd like to be able to do it with a variety of instance sizes. If you want to get involved in FreeBSD, a good way is to trawl through the PR database looking for bugs you can produce patches for. Alternatively, if you're more documentation minded than coding minded, I'd love to see someone write a step-by-step guide (with screenshots etc.) to signing up for AWS, launching a FreeBSD instance, SSHing in, downloading and extracting a ports tree, and (e.g.) installing and configuring Apache. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AlanCrowe · 2012-01-13 15:13 How do I check that my CD is bit perfect? I've had grief with trying to install off home made CD's. Last time it turned out of be a faulty motherboard :-( So now I worry. I've downloaded the boot-only iso and burned it: burncd raw fixate /home/alan/Downloads/FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso but is there a command to check a CD rom against an iso? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-13 16:55 md5 it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AlanCrowe · 2012-01-13 17:37 I'm not sure what you are suggesting here. I thought for a minute that "md5 -r" might walk the file system on the CD, but -r is > -r Reverses the format of the output. This helps with visual diffs. Does nothing when combined with the -ptx options but even if that did work, why would the md5 of the files on the CD agree with the md5 of the .iso on my hard disk? Is the idea to convert my CD back into an iso with mkisofs and then md5 both isos to check that they are the same? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-13 17:43 md5 /dev/cd0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AlanCrowe · 2012-01-13 18:05 Burning my CD seems to have failed skolem# mount /dev/acd0 /cdrom mount: /dev/acd0 Invalid sectorsize 2352 for superblock size 8192: Invalid argument I'll buy some fresh blank CD's and try again tomorrow Meanwhile I'm gone to the ftp site and I'm expecting to see MD5 (FreeBSD-8.1-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso) = 7266163259fe288f08e3749503c58f73 for my existing boot disk, but I get inder# md5 /dev/acd0 MD5 (/dev/acd0) = d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e more confusing still skolem# md5 /dev/acd0 MD5 (/dev/acd0) = d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e I'm getting the same md5 with raw devices on different machines running different releases with different CD's in the drvie. I'm pretty sure it is not doing what I want. The only success I've had is that the ftp site says MD5 (FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso) = 70b4b0dd42c309da79ce63ba2789cfe3 and skolem# md5 /home/alan/Downloads/FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso MD5 (/home/alan/Downloads/FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso) = 70b4b0dd42c309da79ce63ba2789cfe3 so my download of the .iso from the ftp site was bit perfect. (I never thought to doubt that, may I don't worry enough :-() ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mariuz · 2012-01-14 23:20 Installing it right now , great now there is an auto partitioner :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AlanCrowe · 2012-01-17 20:51 I've install [cdrtools](http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/url.cgi?ports/sysut ils/cdrtools/pkg-descr) and I'm hoping that I can read the cd with readcd to get a file that ought to be the same as the iso I used to write the cd in the first place. Then I can check the MD5. Probably report after the SOPA black out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AlanCrowe · 2012-01-19 15:37 That didn't help: cdrtools is only for SCSI devices (except that there is a work around that I've not followed up) But Section 19.6.6 of the FreeBSD handbook, *Duplicating Data CDs*, gives the game away dd if=/dev/acd0 of=file.iso bs=2048 gets the iso back from the CD. Then I do md5 file.iso and it is the same as on the website. I've got a bit perfect CD :-)
