That's embarassing! Configure the editor's right-margin lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EganSolo · 2020-06-18 23:28 I've gone over the Tools->Options twice and I must be seriously blind! I can't find the spot where I can specify the width of the right- margin! I don't want it at 80... Anyone cares to point me in the right direction? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2020-06-18 23:53 The visible line? Tools > Options > Editor > display => top right The column used by codetools, for automatic line wrap? Codetools > line splitting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EganSolo · 2020-06-19 03:38 Thanks Martin! That was it! I needed both. I'm kicking myself that I missed these and really appreciate your fast response Egan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FTurtle · 2020-06-19 06:58 I often see questions like "I can't find something in options". I would like to remind about filter. It is very useful thing. In particular: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- howardpc · 2020-06-19 10:15 An IDE is never perfect. However, such oft-repeated questions about the location (or existence) of certain IDE options suggest to me that in spite of the many ways in which the complexity of possible options available via the IDE Options dialog is handled still may be sub-optimal from the user's point of view. FTurtle points out again the brilliant filter - however, many people are unaware of it, or if they do notice it, think it must be an advanced feature they would never use. And in this case, it also underlines a shortcoming of the GUI: the line-splitting option is not found by a query about margins, nor is there any indication in the margin setting that a further margin- related setting is available on another page. In fact, the separation in the dialog of the visible-right-margin setting from the option to split-lines-longer-than-the-right-margin over two dialog pages is not good. At the least there should be a link between them. Better would be a redesigned UI that better integrated editor and codetools options since they overlap to a large degree, and from the user point of view the distinction between them can seem rather arbitrary. It makes sense to those who programmed it, sure, and I can see why it has evolved in the way it has. I would say there is still room for improvement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2020-06-19 11:08 You can also search the value: 80 But that too, also finds half of it. The dropdown is not found. (patches welcome). A link (as exists for some other options) would be a good start. (patches welcome). Having 2 options is ok. I do want to have the visible margin at 80, but codetools at a higher value. But that shows the issue: To many users with to many expectations, leads to plenty of settings. A none-advanced view, would be nice to have. But it requires someone to do it. And it requires to agree an what is advanced, and what not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eljo · 2020-06-19 12:51 Quote from: Martin_fr on June 19, 2020, 01:08:26 pmYou can also search the value: 80 But that too, also finds half of it. Expand the editor shown while editing the color scheme, to allow dragging most, if not all, the relevant parts. Setting the right margin, the number of digits or visibility for the line numbers, etc. Leave the existing options as they are,  create an editor only options dialog (below the options menu) for the above. After a couple of releases, make it the default editor, when one selects the editor group, on the tree, instead of the editor\general that is now shown. Just a thought.
