Annoying response to source errors while typing lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wp · 2014-04-15 14:35 I don't know when this feature was introduced, but the current trunk version at least has an annoying error checking feature while typing: Create a new project in Lazarus. After implementation type Code: [Select]const   N = 1   // forget the semicolon! procedure Dummy( When you type the opening bracket after "Dummy" the cursor jumps to the start of line, and there is a unimpressive error message in the event window. Since I normally don't realize that I am messing up the entire line this way. This happens when an error exists somewhere in the source code, in this case it is the missing semicolon after N=1. The compiler will tell me later that something is wrong somewhere in the file. Therefore, I don't like this feature at all. Is there a way to turn it off? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2014-04-15 14:50 Probably Tools > Options > Editor > completion and hints > Auto display prototypes This triggers codetools and goes to the error. [edit]: Fixed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wp · 2014-04-15 15:08 Yes, that did the trick. But I wonder if there's anybody around who understands that "Auto display prototypes" means "auto-detect errors while typing". And I wonder also if this feature should not be off by default. [EDIT] Just saw in svn that you already have fixed the sourceeditor. Impressive! Now the editor is behaving correctly even with AutoDisplayPrototypes turned on. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2014-04-15 15:16 It was not meant to detect the error (and no longer does). It opens the hint, with the list of params to a procedure, if you type "(" That is it shows you the prototype of the procedure. Many people new to the language (and new to the IDE) benefit from that. (Many have also asked for other similar things, like completion dropdown, to always show / And many other IDE do) Of course experienced users on the other side want less of this automation. So there is no perfect setting. While the IDE is highly customizable, it is (due to that) also true, that many options are hard to find. But they are hard to find to newcomers, as well as experts. Yet I guess the experts have more means and experience in how to find those settings. So I thought to make it newcomer friendly... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wp · 2014-04-15 15:19 I completely agree. And thanks again for the immediate fix (see my posting above)
