when is "Add Editor File to Project" needed? lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mas steindorff · 2013-10-02 19:54 A coworker and I have been working on a large project.  We try to  separate as much code from the forms  as possible in order to simplify the SVN update process.  I have found that many of my colleagues units have not been " added to the project " under the  Lazarus menu option and unit list however everything is compiling and working as expected.   The units that have not been added are simply code -  no forms and no initiation section.  We've tried a simple modification to one of these unit and it is still detected  and included for the rebuild for the quick compile option even if the editor file is closed. My question is simply is this OK to do this way? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- taazz · 2013-10-02 20:10 yes as long as the unit file is in the projects search path it will be detected and handled as needed, the moment you move it outside the projects path it will create problems though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- macmike · 2013-10-08 14:26 And things like the Todo list are based on the units in the project, not those in the search path so if you use things like the Todo list it might be annoying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mas steindorff · 2013-10-08 16:09 Quote from: macmike on October 08, 2013, 04:26:19 pmAnd things like the Todo list are based on the units in the project, not those in the search path so if you use things like the Todo list it might be annoying. That explains why I only see about 2/3 of the list!  This feature alone is enough to mandate the requirement that all files be put into the project.  Thank you both for your input. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Graeme · 2013-10-08 16:58 Quote from: mas steindorff on October 02, 2013, 09:54:21 pmMy question is simply is this OK to do this way? Yes that is fine, as long as those units are in the search paths, then FPC will find them. The "project management" included with Lazarus IDE is not critical to FPC application, but they are handy to quickly find units (at least faster than File->Open). The IDE also include other toy features like "export your project", or "clean project files" or "create a zip archive of the project" etc... Those functionality requires knowing about all units, but again such functionality is not critical to a FPC project.
