Lazarus crashes after “Rescan FPC dir sources”

Hi!
I have: VMware 8.0, “uname –a: Linux 2.4.32 athlon i386 GNU/Linux”,”
gcc –v: 2.95.4”
I installed fpc 2.4.2 and lazarus 0.9.30 as presented http://wiki.free
pascal.org/Installing_Lazarus#Installing_Free_Pascal_under_Linux from
sources.  The command “ppc386 -i” give me total info about fpc,
because I think installing of fpc finished good. Lazarus was installed
without error. After command “./startlazarus” I made
“Environment>Options>fpc sources  ->
/usr/local/share/src/fpc-2.4.2/fpc” and   “Environment>Rescan dir fpc
sources ”. I got message “Failed to create new thread. …”.  Empty
project was compiled without error. If I put button to form and want
to write event (double click), I got message 
“…/lazarus/lcl/classes.pp(32, 10) Erorr: unit not found: Classes.” 
What is this and what I need to do? Thanks. 
Postscript: I tried variants: fpc 2.4.4 and lazarus 0.9.30, fpc 2.6.0
and lazarus 0.9.30. Result is same.

I notice two things

gcc -v =2.95

That is prehistoric.

Could indicate old thread implementation. What Linux are you using? Is
it 2.4.0 or newer?
