It may be me but from time to time as I work, a unit will not compile
or behave erratically.  I find little snippets of my own code in
strange places in the source.

It may be after I move stuff around with cut and paste. I am not sure.

Well, those versions seem so old that they're propably not even
supported anymore. You can try getting latest from Daily Snapshots
link at:
http://www.hu.freepascal.org/lazarus/

maybe your file system is corrupted that could cause strange
behaviour. I had an old hard drive that would start messing up when it
was near full.
