IDE Windows resizing lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antsnest · 2011-05-28 14:06 Having finally got to grips withn Lazarus after many years of Delphi I'm actually starting to get code working agan but am plagued by the windows resizing every time I start Lazarus. I normally keep the main IDE window maximised along the top, the messages at the bottom, object inspector on the left below the main window using the rest of the screen for the editor and forms. Every time I start Lazarus the message window places itself over the main IDEa windo at the top, the object inspector shifts itself up to the top of the screen and the editor and forms resize them, selves to the same size as the onbj inspector and stick themselves over it. I'm also getting windows resizing when the compiled programmes run to the point that I'm having to set window size and position as part of my startup code. While it only takes me a few seconds each time it's downright irritating. Running Windows 7, happens with 1, 2 or  3 monitors active Any ideas welcome. Tim ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bad Sector · 2011-05-28 14:56 First of all make sure you have v0.9.30. If you have a nightly build or a custom build from subversion then try to get a newer one. If there are still issues with the nightly or custom build, you will probably have better luck asking in the mailing list. Now assuming you have v0.9.30, go to Environment -> Options... and from the tree at the left side select Window. Make sure that the windows you want to stay in place have the Restore window geometry checked. If this is the case, then place them wherever you want them and for each one select Custom position and then press Get position. Lazarus will use these positions at startup instead of trying to remember the last positions. If the problem still persists, you probably have some 3rd party program that messes up with Windows. Some program like WindowBlinds or some overzealous antivirus, or some desktop manager or whatever can impact these things. Try closing all programs you have running at the background and on the system tray and see if the problem is still there. If not, you found the reason: re-run the programs one by one and each time try again until you find the culprit. Obviously in such a case there is little that the Lazarus developers can do since 3rd party program behaviour is outside of their control. In any case, if you still have the problem you might want to provide us with more details like what programs are running in the background, what exactly version of the system you have and even what hardware and drivers. Some drivers tend to mess up with programs (for example thanks to my Asus Xonar Essence ST's drivers i can't debug from within Lazarus because it adds a hook in every executable's launch that causes gdb to misbehave). If you find a solution please also mention it here for others who might have the same or a similar problem (i found the reason behind gdb's behaviour from someone having a similar problem with Creative's drivers - i think). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antsnest · 2011-05-31 19:42 Sorry, I've been experimenting with the suggestions. Sadly none of them worked. Running standard 0.9.30 Tried the window geometry option, the options stick in the options but the windows don't obey the rules. I'm not running any of the pointless desktop enhancements, as soon as I set a system up I set to maximum system speed and dump all the clever pretty bits. I am running Objectdock from Stardock but it happens with or without this. Tested with no currently running programmes (apart from itself) I have 2 display cards, ATI RAdeon 5400 and NVidia Quadro NVS 290 running 3 screens, at the moment only the two attached to the ATI are running as the third is attached to another system but it happens with 2 or 3. All Lazarus windows are displayed on the primary display, they never move out of it. As a testy I moved the main window, messages window and object inspector to the secondary screen, saved the project and closed down, on restarting the windows reverted back to the main window and resized themselves again. Apart from display drivers I have 3 HDDs & 1 DVD rewriter all using system ATA drivers, there's a scanjet attached but I haven't got round to installing the drivers yet, Brother 1430 printer. Motherboard is Gigabyte M68NT-52, Athlon II X3 445 Processer at 3100. All standard MB drivers are installed. UAC is set to never notify, AV is McAfee, Zonelarm is running but stopping it make sno difference. think that's about everything. As it's a fairly new machine i haven't got round to installing everything. Tim ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eny · 2011-05-31 20:45 Here's my 2 cents, maybe it'll help in some way (Window$ XP). The Lazarus IDE windows do not work well when you want to do anything fancy (for example hide the IDE windows on run or need to rely on Lazarus integrating with the desktop flawlessly). What works for me is this (I have 2 monitors): I have all windows positioned in the for me most logical place (menu with component tabs at the tob, OI at the left, editor in the middle and the messages at the bottom). All designer windows are in the default state (i.e. not maximized!!) and positioned manually. The options 'Environment/Window/Hide IDE windows on run' and 'Environment/Window/Hide Messages Icons' are disabled. With this config my IDE is stable: all designer windows stay at the designated position. When I stop and start Lazarus they all reappear in the position I left them. And when I decide to move the messages window to my 2nd monitor, it stays there. And it reappears at that location after stoppind and starting Lazarus. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antsnest · 2011-05-31 22:02 Thanks, sadly setting it up to match yours didn't work. I may do a complete deinstall and reinstall to see if that works. Tim ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antsnest · 2011-06-21 08:00 Finally the resolution! It turned out to be the ATI desktop manager (someone suggested display utilities earlier). I thought I'd switched this off months ago, it appears that when I added a 3rd screen and installed the drivers for that the desktop manager swithed itself back on. The wndows still aren't exactly as I'd hope but at least they;ve stopped juping al over the place. Thanks for the help. Tim
