persistent blocks lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MartinScs1 · 2008-02-08 12:55 I decided to write a simple program in Lazarus just to try it. Seems to work well. Only I am used to work in Delphi in the classic way, with persistent blocks on, which you do not seem to have implemented. Will you do that in the future? Otherwise great stuff, boys! Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zaher · 2008-02-09 22:17 What is "persistent blocks"? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MartinScs1 · 2008-02-11 15:49 When Persistent blocks is on a selected block will "persist", that is remain active, even if you change the cursor position without doing anything with the block at that time. It is a remnant of the old Turbo Pascal time, but I find it very handy and use it all the time. In fact, I find the other way of working with selected blocks, which are invented I think by Microsoft, very irritating. Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hy · 2008-02-14 11:27 I am using persistent blocks too I'd really love to see this in lazarus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zaher · 2008-02-14 23:26 I am not understand, but i think you meant for POS application we need to take all key to one edit, not in the active edit (the focused), it useful for barcode scanning. What useful "persistent blocks" for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hy · 2008-02-15 20:24 okay, let me explain in detail: First, I will show what happens in a regular style-editor (lazarus and most other known editors): Usually if you mark a block of code, let's say four lines, and then move the cursor by using the arrow keys the *mark vanishes*.  If you hit a character - say 'b' (for begin) - the marked block vanishes and the character 'a' is inserted instead. This is awful! Persistent means, that the marked block is not unmarked or deleted by any action. You can move the cursor down a few lines using the cursor/arrow-keys and then (for example) copy the marked block to the current position - usually the default keystrokes are for a copy operation. This doesn't affect the clipboard which might hold other useful data as well. So you actually have two clipboards. Usually, persistent blocks have some special keyboard shortcuts to simplify work: - copy marked block to current cursor position - toggle mark / hide selection - delete block (or - move block to current position if you have any quetions, don't bother asking... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zaher · 2008-02-15 20:51 Ahh, i remember that it is Turbo Pascal 5, that very old editor. But i think it supported in SynEdit. I must read the topic from the beginning now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnvdWaeter · 2008-02-16 11:39 Quote Usually, persistent blocks have some special keyboard shortcuts to simplify work: - copy marked block to current cursor position - toggle mark / hide selection - delete block (or - move block to current position Me too, used this all the time in Delphi 7.... switching to Lazarus, it was gone! Rly would love to get these features back... John
