turbo's like editor lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2006-09-07 11:51 I've tried Turbo Delphi (for win32). The IDE, especially the source editor is awesome! Unlike BDS 2005 which is slow and buggy, Turbo Delphi is quiet fast and stable. Turbo Delphi IDE can also be configured to be like Delphi 7 (classic) style for MDI-hater developers, except the component palette. When we're gonna have Lazarus IDE to be as good as Delphi IDE? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-09-07 13:15 Hmmm? The Lazarus IDE is way better already since it doesn't crash twice every hour? ;-p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Bernd · 2006-09-07 14:38 The Lazarus IDE does not need .NET. A big advantage. Regards, Bernd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marmin · 2006-09-07 16:48 And the download size is ten times as small, ad the program doesn't need all the Microsoft extensions, one doesn't need keys or annoying registrations. The IDE is simple yet effective the way it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudieD · 2006-09-07 17:22 The IDE runs on a lot more that just win ! That's the mega ++++++ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-09-07 20:00 The multiple platforms of Lazarus are a great plus, that's right. I just installed Turbo Delphi. Couldn't install on the same machine as BDS 2006, and wondered, but not to long, since it's more or less exactly BDS 2006, just stripped down to not allow third party components The small number of components may also be the reason for the speed available. And I couldn't get it to crash in a full hour of testing, even though it has exactly the same build number as BDS 2006 with update 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chrnobel · 2006-09-07 20:14 Snip from Turbo Download page: " You will need to download two files. The prereqs.zip file contains additional run-time files required by Turbo Explorer that may not be currently installed on your computer. This includes the Microsoft.NET 1.1 runtime and SDK, the J# run-time, InternetExplorer 6.01, and MSXML." Just forget it, no applications here spun in the Microsoft web. No no, Lazarus and FPC is the future, and in my opinion Borland is signing their own death sentence by selling their soul to Microsoft. Christian ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2006-09-08 08:53 QuoteNo no, Lazarus and FPC is the future, and in my opinion Borland is signing their own death sentence by selling their soul to Microsoft. Yup... bad decision of Borland! But I'm not talking about Borland or M$ things here... I'm talking about Delphi IDE feature, especially the source editor. I don't know why Borland requires .Net for the IDE features. Obviously those features are very possible to be built without any .Net library dependencies hell. I'm just expecting Lazarus IDE features will be as good as Delphi IDE (or even better), but -of course- without .Net. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-09-08 09:03 Sounds more like Borland bashing to be honest Using Microsoft stuff is no crime and something that is common to most Windows products. And they just started to get slowly back to a developer friendly product, and you're already at condemning them for selling out their soul. FreePascal + Lazarus are worlds ahead in multi-platform support. But the Delphi IDE, even though quite unstable in the past, offers features like real good code refactoring, code folding, history and diffs (which is quite difficult with FPC+Lazarus unless you are good enough to set up CVS + Subversion + all the necessary tools in a comfortable way), docking and some other features which are - if you're limited to the Windows platform anyway - still very good points (and with docking I don't refer to the MDI interface in general, but about the possibility to dock windows like the message window to the code editor, for example). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marmin · 2006-09-08 19:33 Another plus: Lazarus has a wealth of pretty good translations. Delphi Turbo has only 4. And one can run multiple copies of lazarus. COde folding would be handy. And a more sophisticated code explorer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2006-09-09 04:04 Lazarus' include file handling is a lot more better than Delphi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-09-09 10:20 @bee: Include file handling? Wow, what's that? I use include files in most projects for project settings, but since it's such a basic thing, what exactly is better in Lazarus? (not doubting, just asking ) @marmin: you can run multiple instances of Delphi as well. But the translations are nice, even though I really should submit a few things about the German translation, since it... well... is funny in a few places "Applikation" for example is rarely used, and more a sticker you stitch to your cloth, but not the imho "usual" translation of application, which would be Anwendung ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legolas · 2006-09-09 10:50 Code folding is available in Lazarus too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-09-09 14:19 Oh sorry, you're right Its concept looks better than Delphis even, but it's not yet perfect with mouswheel scrolling I think (and some more highlighting of expandable lines couldn't harm as well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2006-09-09 18:12 When will feature X will be available? When you'll make it.. it's that simple. You can't do that with Delphi! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2006-09-11 04:31 Quotewhat exactly is better in Lazarus? The main point is.. Lazarus treats inc files just like integrated parts of the main source file, while Delphi treats inc files just like another different source file. For example... ctrl+shift+arrow will work on Lazarus though the declaration and implementation are separated (implementation in inc file). It simply does not work on Delphi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-09-11 06:49 Ok, I never tried that in Lazarus, but I know that it doesn't work in Delphi, so that's a very good reason
