loading project doesn't load the pascal files.

If I load the project file it doesn't load any of the other files.
It does show the project name after the Ide version.  v2.2.6
If I use Open to load the lpr file it does load the file.
If I use Open Unit and select a unit.pas file it doesn't do anything.
If I use Open and select a unit.pas file it opens it and the form
file.
It compiles and runs.
When I save the project, close it, exit Lazarus and restart it, the
same process begins again.
Is there some way to rebuild the project file or turn a feature on?

Have you tried using the Project Inspector?
Lazarus main menu > Project Inspector > Project Inspector

If you want to add a unit *.pas file into the project, use the Add
button in the Project Inspector.

What feature do you want?

To rebuild the project:
Lazarus main menu > Run > choose: Build or Clean_up_and_Build
