Is there an autosave in the editor and if so, can I turn it off lazarus / 9-Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billd · 2023-07-29 14:02 Hello all, Is there some auto-save switch in the Lazarus editor?  I am not hitting any save buttons, but it seems my projects are getting saved automatically. I don't like this because if I make temporary code changes to test things and they don't work it overwrites my primary file. I only want to save if I select save or save as. Thanks for any suggestions. BTW, I did look around the setup windows and did not see anything specific to this so I am stumped. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alpine · 2023-07-29 14:11 Tools-->Options Write 'backup' into the search filter field (top-left) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billd · 2023-07-29 14:19 I searched for "backup" but I don't think that's what I want. What seems to be happening is that Lazarus's IDE is automatically saving my changes to a project without my asking it to do so. I do see that the default is "same name (in subdirectory)" so I would I select "no backup" if I want this to stop (or select one of the other options so my originals are not overwritten)? thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alpine · 2023-07-29 14:32 Do you mean the auto-save of the editor files before Compile/Build? I'm not aware of how it can be turned off, but I personally consider that it's better that way. Otherwise you'll wonder why it is not working as it should when stepping out a line with the debugger. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billd · 2023-07-29 14:35 yes, I guess it can't be disabled then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JuhaManninen · 2023-07-29 14:57 Quote from: billd on July 29, 2023, 04:35:33 pmyes, I guess it can't be disabled then? Exactly. Lazarus uses an external FPC compiler and all sources must be saved for it. Delphi integrates a compiler and can compile without saving. You must use a different strategy for you tested "primary" files. Copy them somewhere when things work, or better yet use a local Git repo with proper commit messages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2023-07-29 14:57 No, it can't. The file must be saved, so the compiler can load it from disk. And also this must be done, so the compiler finds other files in the directory. It would require a complete shadow storage in a temp folder.... And that doesn't exist. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billd · 2023-07-29 14:58 Thanks all. I will process my backup differently know this. -Bill
