 I had False Positives with Delphi 6 too.  I think it is a
conspiration against Pascal.

does anyone have any avast warnings when turning on GDB debug options
in lazarus
(the option to write symbols, external  to a file, AFAIR)

Yes, embeded debug information uses some technics and structs that are
detected by heuristic antivirus algorithms as virus.  Can't do
anything with it.
