Wiki - Debugging category is not found lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-07 14:41 When I enter 'debugging' as a search term in the wiki,  the category is not found, although several sub-items are. I was tempted to try and fix it, but so much good work has been done there that I was worried that I might break something. If the author(s) read(s) this, thanks for the good work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FTurtle · 2015-05-07 15:12 I dont know how it was earlier, but now: 1. Searching is case sensitive. 2. Namespace "Category" should be specified. http://wiki.freepascal.org/Category:Debugging ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-07 17:49 @FTurtle, It is obvious now you show it. I wonder how someone looking for debugging will know to precede it with Category:  and to use uppercase? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Signal · 2015-05-07 18:14 The wiki search is case insensitive for me. Neither 'Debugging' nor 'debugging' return the category Debugging, which seems strange. However, both return lots of hits on the Debugging category page, just not the page itself, so it's not really a problem. The Index page continues not to be an actual index. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FTurtle · 2015-05-08 03:02 Tested now. Both variants "Debugging" and "debugging" works properly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-08 09:42 It does not work for me. Looking at the wiki source, the title is 'Category:Debugging'. There is no space between ':' and 'Debugging'. This means that Debugging (in any case) cannot be parsed. AFAIK all parsing ignores case, as per Pascal. I' ll look through the links and start inserting the missing space. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-08 09:55 I just found that all categories are defined without a space after the ':'. It clearly needs some research and discussion before any changes are made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FTurtle · 2015-05-08 12:09 Do not rush. Before thinking "what to do" better think about few other things: 1. What is wrong? 2. Is it really wrong? 3. How it should be right? 4. How it is at other similar places? For example: 1. At wiki.freepascal.org "Special pages/Categories" searching is case insensitive. I think it is right. 2. a) At wiki.freepascal.org "Special pages/All pages with prefix" searching is case sensitive. It looks like wrong. But... b) At en.wikipedia.org "Special pages/All pages with prefix" searching is case sensitive too. Moreover, before searching it makes first symbol uppercase. If you make second symbol uppercase, you will find nothing. So, what is wrong at wiki.freepascal.org ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-08 16:20 I think the main question is probably: ' What is the purpose of categories?' If a category lists all pages that contain a particular subject, then it seems to me that a search for that subject should show the category first in the listing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chronos · 2015-05-08 16:41 For "how it should work" just try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page as this is main showcase for MediaWiki project. Categories are simply groups of pages with similar content. Basically you find one page, scroll down to its end and click to category to see in which categories page is and what similar related pages are. See explanation at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Categories ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-08 16:49 Thanks Chronos for the second link. It states that categories are of little use for navigation. However, having once found a page, it seems one should scroll to the bottom to find the appropriate category link. I can live with that.☺ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2015-05-08 16:52 If you search "debugging", then on top of the result are tabs/options. One of them is "Everything", click it, and the category is in the results. (Not on first place though.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-08 16:58 My expectations originated from the Tutorials category. If the wiki is searched for tutorials, in upper or lower case, the category page is listed first. Whatever was done to achieve that seems to me to be the most useful way of helping the often desperate seeker of knowledge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2015-05-08 17:12 Not exactly A page is listed, that redirects to the category page: Quote    More Lazarus/FPC Tutorials     #Redirect [[:Category:Tutorials|Assorted Tutorials]]     52 B (5 words) - 17:55, 16 December 2012 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2015-05-08 17:16 Also IMHO the category page is not the best search result in that case anyway. Best would be to show: http://wiki.freepascal.org/GDB_Debugger_Tips It answers lots of question, in case of trouble with the debugger. Alternative a "debugging portal" page could be created. Like http://wiki.freepascal.org/Portal:Windows http://wiki.freepascal.org/Portal:Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-09 12:02 Thanks, I learnt some more. The everything tab is useful. I need to read pages more carefully. I was not aware of portals, and neither until a few days ago of categories. Perhaps there is a way of bringing them more quickly to the notice of wiki users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windsurfer · 2015-05-09 12:51 When I have a little time, I'll look at building a debugging portal.
