Pascal on iOS? lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2014-01-23 06:37 As an old-time pascal programmer, I'm dreaming that some times in the future, there will be a Pascal script IDE for iOS (iPad/iPhone/iPod) and Android. Full object Pascal capabilities (at least at the level of Delphi 7) but with optional variable/type declaration (except for class of course). Looking at some great IDEs for other languages available on iOS platform really envy me. Take a look at these: - Codea (Lua) : http://twolivesleft.com/Codea/ - Pythonista (Python) : http://omz-software.com/pythonista/ - PHP and JS (Kodiak) : http://www.becomekodiak.com/ Some people do make great apps using those tools. Yes, on iPad. It's amazing, don't you think? If there is a similar app like those using pascal language, I'll buy it instantly. Well, I hope my dream will come true. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- taazz · 2014-01-23 06:49 you can start here http://smartmobilestudio.com/ don't know how similar is to codea (I guess not so much) but its pascal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2014-01-23 07:19 No… you don't get it. What I dream about is how to code ON an ipad, not how to code FOR an ipad. Using pascal. The IDE/editor and the interpreter is IN the ipad, so you could code on the go, offline. Take a look at the video demos of those mentioned apps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- taazz · 2014-01-23 07:32 My advice......, don't, there is no reason to code on the IPAD or any pad for that matter. there is a reason why laptops are not used in the daily life of a programmer and farther more there is a reason why keyboards are still the number 1 selling peripherals along with mouses. I don't mind what I have seen on the video of code idea I just don't think that it is anything more than a wow effect for newbies, kids and hobbyists.  I don't think all that is very productive it is creative I'll give you that but not productive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CaptBill · 2014-01-23 07:52 Quote from: bee on January 23, 2014, 08:19:51 amNo… you don't get it. Check this out. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3cgAqlkzaL0NzcxMmU0ZTAtMGRhZi00NzI4LT gxNjctMjkxNDkwNjMwMzMy/edit This is "ComponentCreate", an ancient Delphi component creator app. So it's quite doable to have a nice tool to carry around on your ipad to write code. You won't be compiling though. ComponentCreate has some excellent concepts/features to simplify component creation. It's less than 2mb. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marcov · 2014-01-23 08:01 - Full D7 support in scripting is very difficult.  It will always be a subset, though in this case not that bad. - IMHO no fan of scripting solutions as a rule. Yes in-application scripting has a place, but I prefer something more compiled. - Afaik nobody is working on an IDE for mobile here. I think your chances are better with the companies that cash in on the mobile hype. (which even counts Embarcadero in its numbers nowadays) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2014-01-23 16:00 Let's not get into irrelevant discussion. There are many interpretations about what productive is, just let everybody decides for themselves. Also it doesn't matter if compiled is better than scripting. Everything has its own place, how niche it is. I looked at Pascal Script (was from RemObject) and I see its features are still far from usable to be an independen scripting language. It's good enough as in-app scripting, but without a host app it's too limited. And I see the development isn't too active either. I'd like to help but I know nothing about making a scripting language. But at least I could help with the testing. Oh, and mobile isn't (just) a hype. It's the future. Believe it or not, smartphone and tablet would be the next general purpose computing device. All facts point to that trend. Embrace it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2014-01-23 17:04 Quote from: bee on January 23, 2014, 05:00:00 pmLet's not get into irrelevant discussion.  Ehm right. Looking forward to your contributions for Lazarus on mobile... with scripting support etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marcov · 2014-01-23 18:57 QuoteAlso it doesn't matter if compiled is better than scripting. Depends on how you define "hype". Hype as in everybody have one, or hype as in being a market for programming tools (and thus for software created with them) that is comparable with other software markets (like webprogramming and client-server programming?) If you think of that the "app" market suddenly spits in two. One, truely standalone apps, two, apps that are simple clients for a service. Market One hardly has a future if you are not a global player with a big marketing budget. Being in the top ten lists of the store is everything, and it is naive to think that the average small player can make a lasting dent there. Sure, there are always Rovio's, but hey, some people win the lottery! (but most don't, and at least the lottery doesn't care if you enter the market late) The more interesting market is the second one. But there any decent technology will do, since the main thing you are selling is the service, and not the app. I fail to see how a scripting only solution will work in either of these markets. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bee · 2014-01-24 02:02 Quote from: marcov on January 23, 2014, 07:57:54 pmI fail to see how a scripting only solution will work in either of these markets. It depends on how you define "work". You don't need to be as big as Rovio to have an app that "works" on the market. Take a look at those apps I mentioned above. Their user base is not big, well, compare to Rovio's. But they are alive, well and prosper. There are many others like them, for example: iLuaBox (lua), Procoding (js), TechBasic (basic), Scotch (visual programming), etc. Even in the small pascal world, we have an example: Embarcadero. We know there are not many pascal programmers in the world, compare to Java for example. But Embarcadero could sell Delphi well enough on that small market. Well, of course Embarcadero is tiny if we compare it to Oracle, but it doesn't have to be that big to be alive.
