How to get and use lazarus trunk? lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bill0287 · 2013-12-15 03:06 Are there any "beginner" instructions on how to obtain and use the lazarus trunk, and what are the pluses and minuses of doing so? For example, does the trunk contain "all" bug fixes that might not otherwise be available in released or snapshot versions? Is it highly unstable? Can the trunk version coexist with a released version? I have seen a few wiki pages on this topic but being new to this, it wasn't a great deal of help. The only snapshots I was able to find are here: ftp://wiki.freepascal.org/pub/lazarus/snapshots/ Is that the right place? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2013-12-15 03:38 QuoteAre there any "beginner" instructions on how to obtain and use the lazarus trunkThere's no such a thing. Learn to use svn once, and you're done. Even the skill can be used for other projects that uses svn. Quoteand what are the pluses and minuses of doing so?New features, new bugs QuoteFor example, does the trunk contain "all" bug fixes that might not otherwise be available in released or snapshot versions?Could be, snapshot is essentially trunk anyway QuoteIs it highly unstable?By nature, yes. But my experience shows that it's not "that" unstable. I mean, the difference with the latest stable in terms of bug is usually negligible, except when a BIG feature is on development. QuoteCan the trunk version coexist with a released version? Read wiki article titled Multiple Lazarus QuoteIs that the right place? That's snapshot, which I can say as prepackaged trunk (or fixes). If you want to use trunk, I really suggest to learn svn and use the instruction in the Getting Lazarus wiki article. Updating will be HELL LOT faster because you only download the difference, not the whole package. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2013-12-15 04:38 Quote from: bill0287 on December 15, 2013, 04:06:35 amAre there any "beginner" instructions on how to obtain and use the lazarus trunk, and what are the pluses and minuses of doing so? http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/fpcup Does SVN checkout etc automatically for you. Multiple lazarus installs etc. Just make sure (on Windows) you have a c:\development directory created, writable and empty. On *nix, it'll install under ~ Note: I'm one of the authors of fpcup... so a bit biased Edit: if you are only keeping Lazarus updated (and always use the same FPC), using plain SVN may be a bit quicker in practice. Is it highly unstable? Can the trunk version coexist with a released version? Trunk contains the newest version. In my experience Lazarus trunk is fairly stable. FPC trunk currently also quite stable. Yes it can coexist. Big Chimp, I downloaded fpcup and used it and successfully installed Laz 1.3 / FPC 2.6.3. So if I want to update this installation again to get newer fixes, do I run fpcup again, or do I use the fcpup_update which now sits on my desktop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avra · 2013-12-15 09:13 Quote from: bill0287 on December 15, 2013, 04:06:35 amAre there any "beginner" instructions on how to obtain and use the lazarus trunkThere was some kind user in this forum who provided FPCUP windows BAT files which do the job for you very friendly. I have touched those just a little to suite my needs. TrunkAll is used if you want both Lazarus trunk and FPC trunk. TrunkLaz is used for Lazarus trunk and FPC 2.6.x. Thanks to FPCUP they can coexist. They also provide update feature. Looking at them will give you an idea how to use any possible Laz+FPC combination, not just the two mentioned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2013-12-15 11:50 Quote from: bill0287 on December 15, 2013, 07:23:50 amSo if I want to update this installation again to get newer fixes, do I run fpcup again, or do I use the fcpup_update which now sits on my desktop? The latter.
