How this forum could be? lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-22 20:32 Vote to make forum nearer to your expectations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2007-03-22 20:56 People should ask smart questions. People should search more before asking another question about file size. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-23 00:32 Perhaps people come just because cannot make a smart question yet...  Consider added your item. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theo · 2007-03-23 11:03 What's the purpose of this poll? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-23 13:07 To know how this forum should be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eric · 2007-03-23 14:44 It all seems a bit pointless to me. The forum is as good as the people taking part make it. You can wish for all sorts of things to be faster/bigger/more comprehensive or whatever, but it won't change anything. If you have any specific proposals for improving the forum, then why not make them? Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-23 14:53 I agree, the forum is as good as the people make it. And  the result probably will show exactly this. I don't have any specific proposals. The poll is a feedback. I could do generic comments, for example: the documentation is very extensive and some time is required to make it more "organic". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eric · 2007-03-23 18:56 I think you're missing the point. This is a community forum; it's not a service provided by 'them' for 'us'. We're not customers, but most of your poll options look like customer demands. You should be looking at what you can offer the forum, not what it can offer you. Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-23 19:37 Most of the poll options is so because, yes, I started from a customers/service providers model. But the point is feedback. Vincent said people should make smart questions, it's right, consider this an option on the list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theo · 2007-03-23 20:11 But I still don't get it. Those n00bs asking the same questions all time will certainly not read your poll results before asking. And those who are answering the questions are already doing their best. Plus all your questions aren't about anything that could be changed by the admins of this forum. So what's the point? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-23 20:24 Yes, do your best once more now and let me make this poll... If people don't vote, they cannot claim.  Identification is not necessary. And feedback is a very good thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zomis · 2007-03-24 14:45 Quote from: "antonio"As you can see, file size is a very popular issue...Yes, because people don't search for old posts, or avalible documentation, before they post. A simple search on Google with the query "lazarus filesize" gives this page: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/File_size_and_smartlinking And for those who actually read through that page, the issue is explained there. I'd like to add the option "This is a silly poll" to the poll options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eric · 2007-03-24 16:27 Yes, I would vote for that. Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-24 20:41 Consider added your option. Well, at this moment, when the feedback itsellf is asked, maybe it can be made a question about organization style of open source. Could this style incorporate feedbacks? I believe the answer is yes, so I want to make this poll yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zorba · 2007-03-25 05:30 It is a community forum and I always received help when I needed by mostly searching the forum. You should be amazed if no one had the same problem as you before. The times I posted questions, I did receive help also so the forum is working as it should. File size: There are 2 types of applications that I can think of (not libraries): Console and GUI Console: size is bigger with FPC/Pascal than if you coded same app by C++ and used g++ to compile.               draw back: have to learn C++ if you don't already know it. GUI: Actually Lazaraus/FPC here is pretty good. It is better than some C++ GUI toolkits, and not worse by much from other toolkits.         To make a fair comparison static link everything. You will be amazed that an executable by Lazarus/Fpc isn't that bad at all size wise.          Now add to that ease of use, and that is a very important factor. I still can't make a GUI that easily to work with in any C++ toolkit.          I can code very comfortably in Lazarus, and that is great for productivity and less frustration.          So GUI apps I would choose Lazarus, and size is good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-03-25 05:38 Thanks for your vote. Probably the main idea which brings people to the forum is that: someone else had the same problem before and I can have an answer by going there. And feedback is always the same thing, every point you could be you'll see your image. I changed the poll title to "How the forum could be", it is nearer what I thinked. Where you see "should" read "could". Well, my poll was voted only by people who is more interested on forum matters (not by lacking in warnings, I should say). Thanks for your vote, and sorry about any problem caused by me.
