any plans to consolidate with freepascal.org? lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-07-05 17:18 I just noticed today that freepascal.org got a face lift.  I suspect it's also on a new server since it's much speedier that before.  No offense, but web  server performance on either lazarus.freepascal.org or www.freepascal.org was not impressive before. So is the lazarus side going to finally be integrated?  And if so, would the community forums take over these? Just curious because I remember seeing in a wiki some thoughts about consolidating the two sites and I think that is a great idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neli · 2006-07-05 18:59 The goal is, indeed, to integrate the websites at some point. The wikis are also still separate though; and this forum is quite different from the fpc community forum, so how these will be combined first is not yet determined. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-07-06 14:02 As a Freepascal and Lazarus user, I daily visit both sites and both forums. One thing I noticed is the general lack of interest. As far as I can see Lazarus and FreePascal are both used by a wide audience. But like myself majority of them are silent bystanders or observers. Forums are not active as they should be and many posts remain unanswered for months. I think we need a different community site, possibly modelled after FreeBasic forums. http://www.freebasic.net No offense to anyone but dynamism of developers is not mirrored in Pascal users generally. We need a fresh start as a community. A new forum site, a new site to share our code snippets etc. Just my two cents... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2006-07-06 15:19 Quote from: "Anonymous"[..]One thing I noticed is the general lack of interest. I think there are a few users (outside the devel team) who activily participate in this forum and try to answer any question that has been asked. (f.i. Sekel is very active with answering.) Questions which go unanswered are usually very specifiq. I do not know anything about a Mac. I'm running Lazarus on windows and Linux (both 32 and 64 bit), so I do not know anything about the Mac. But to build a new site? No. A new site to share your code(snippets)? No, you can do that on the Wiki. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-07-06 22:07 Quote from: "Anonymous"As a Freepascal and Lazarus user, I daily visit both sites and both forums. Then I would like it ask you: Why were you a silent bystander? This may be one of the most important questions here. QuoteI think we need a different community site, possibly modelled after FreeBasic forums. Besides number of posts and the sections, that forum is almost equal to this. You can propose that we create new sections on the forum. I´ve being insisting with Michael to add more sections to the forum, like a Windows CE specific area. QuoteWe need a fresh start as a community. A new forum site, I don´t think that a new forum site would magically solve any problem at all. Instead it´s better to improve the current forum and website. One thing that would increase general usage of the forum and also answers would be merging Free Pascal and Lazarus forums. Many questions here acctually are Free Pascal questions. I also prefer the design of this forum as to the design of free pascal forum (in the sence that it´s easier to find the latest questions here then there). Quotea new site to share our code snippets What mechanism you propose to share code snippets? Perhaps a forum section dedicated to it? I do have some code snipets that could be of use to others, but are too simple to be on Lazarus CCR, and too big and specific to be on the Wiki. Like a component to create a button based on 2 images (1 for button down, another for button up). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-07-06 22:35 Quote from: "Anonymous"So is the lazarus side going to finally be integrated?  And if so, would the community forums take over these? As you can see here: http://www.freepascal.org/wiki/index.php/Merging_Lazarus_and_FPC Many things are planned to be merged, but it´s progressing slowly. Currently only the Bug tracker is fully merged. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-07-07 15:01 I agree with Sekel, I also like Lazarus Forums more user friendly then the FPC forums. The FPC Forums don't give you the last date that a category has changed in it's list, so I have to go thru each off them to see when it was last modified.
