Considering move from BCB6 to Lazarus lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hawk · 2006-04-19 14:04 Hi, I have so far been developing shareware applications for the windows platform using BCB6 and have been pretty happy with it until a few months ago. I'm now getting concerned about the future of Borland's products (and of my projects) as they seem to want to sell the IDE business to focus on application life cycle management. http://www.borland.com/us/company/news/press_releases/2006/02_08_06_bo rland_acquires_segue_software.html On the other hand, I have tried out the Borland Developer Studio 2006 and I'm not convinced with it so far. So my questions are: - What are the pitfalls to look for if I decide to move to Lazarus? - Are there a lot of people who moved from Borland products (Delphi and C++ Builder) to Lazarus? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-04-21 20:18 Quote from: "Hawk"I'm now getting concerned about the future of Borland's products (and of my projects) as they seem to want to sell the IDE business to focus on application life cycle management. - Are there a lot of people who moved from Borland products (Delphi and C++ Builder) to Lazarus? Lazarus was created as a Delphi clone. Today we are adding functionality Delphi may never have, such as native PDA support, so we are starting to go our own path. You can expect that a good amount of Lazarus users were previously using Delphi. Not so much about C++ because the language is different. Some big projects like TurboCASH are starting to use Lazarus. Personally I think it's sad that Borland choose to focus on ALM and .NET, rather then extend VCL to be cross-platform and add new powerful features to it. The path of Lazarus is to add new powerful features like cross- platform, unicode and integrated help system, but at the same time remain with good compatibility with VCL. It is already cross-platform to Windows, Linux, Mac OS X or any other UNIX. In the future we will also PDAs (Windows CE has parts working already) Quote- What are the pitfalls to look for if I decide to move to Lazarus? Move in what sense? To convert existing projects or to create new projects on Lazarus. If you are creating new projects there shouldn't be many problems. If you are converting existing code, then say so and we can give hints specific to this.
