DotNet lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eduardo Alves · 2006-02-09 21:49 It is possible that the Lazarus comes to support dotnet? Lazarus + MONO? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2006-02-09 22:37 Unlikely. Lazarus is written for fpc and fpc will probably not support dotnet: http://www.freepascal.org/faq.html#dotnet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech-pro · 2006-02-10 09:53 What are the implications of this for future Windows OS? (I realise that no-one can see into the future, but perhaps some knowledgeable speculation.) Is Microsoft likely to withdraw support for native code / API applications at some time? Could OS restrictions be applied to unmanaged code for security (or other) reasons? Are there any Windows Vista beta testers here who have run Lazarus under Vista? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-02-10 18:52 The chance of Windows API being dropped is extremely low. It would take at least 5 years for a transition like that. Windows is completely dependent on that API, this would represent a major break in compatibility and backwards compatibility has always being a key factor in Windows sucess. Dropping compatibility in such a deep way could be enougth for millions to migrate to Linux (or Mac OS on Intel now) ... they won't risk it. About security reasons. There is nothing particularly unsecure on unmanaged code compared to managed code. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-02-16 19:53 Yes, i understanding, but if the lazarus compile without FPC for .NET with MONO, its possible? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2006-02-17 22:23 No ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-02-18 02:48 I fail to see any use for .NET on Lazarus. Worse yet the clone (Mono). Lazarus is dedicated to cross platform native software, not big, slow frameworks. .NET was created by developers who went from Delphi to Microsoft for a bigger salary. It introduced on MS products all those things that already existed on Delphi for many years. Do you miss any particular functionality? If so, tell us. It's just question of finding a component that does it or creating a component yourself. We do appreciate new components ^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudieD · 2006-02-20 14:35 I have created a test CGI app over the weekend with FPC and MySQL (Lazarus as Editor) and I tested it on a PII with 128 MB Ram that runs both ISS and Apache and also the MySQL server and the response time where amazing. I'm sure that you won't even be able to install/run the .net env on there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2006-02-20 16:06 For those who are interested in the amount of .NET used in Vista: http://www.grimes.demon.co.uk/dotnet/vistaAndDotnet.htm http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,1995,1820607,00.asp (I won't fear the future yet) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jack · 2006-02-21 20:36 Quote from: "sekel"Do you miss any particular functionality? I wish there was a media player component (something to play mpeg files) under linux. Someone mentioned once about using mplayer, but I don't know how to write a component that will wrap mplayer. If anyone did this, I'd be forever in his/her debt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bshellenberg · 2006-02-21 21:45 Quote from: "jack"Quote from: "sekel"Do you miss any particular functionality? I would PAY someone if they would do this (mplayer component under linux). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mattias · 2006-02-21 23:07 How much? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bshellenberg · 2006-02-22 01:19 PM me. Name your price. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-03-06 05:23 Has anyone take you up on this? Will this be a closed source thing? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bshellenberg · 2006-03-06 16:47 No takers yet (guess nobody likes money; or.. nobody can do it). My offer is to pay someone to get it done and include it with Lazarus or make it available GPL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lepidosteus · 2006-03-06 17:15 Well actually I have some spare time and wouldn't mind doing it, but there are two problems : 1 - it may take more than a month (as i said, on my spare time). 2 - I practiced a lot of programming languages and thus haven't a really good pascal syntax. Oh my code works, but it doesn't looks like the usual 'clean&beautiful' opensource code. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-03-07 01:46 Hello, I applied. Please check your PMs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lepidosteus · 2006-03-08 03:05 In case that could help : http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtkplayerembed and http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerplug-in/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bshellenberg · 2006-03-09 18:36 Thanks guys. I'm looking at all the offers I've received. Everything from "give me a week and I'll send it to you" all the way to $10,000 was given to me. For the guy that wants 10Gs, sorry. Again, my intent is for this to go into Lazarus, not for me privately, so the value is less than it would otherwise be. But I'll chew on it and pick a horse to run with (maybe two just to make sure someone does it). This would be a good component for a lot of lazarus users, so its worth the time and money. Thanks again! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudieD · 2006-03-10 11:51 Thanks bshellenberg, That that will be greate for LFPC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-03-24 00:26 Hello bshellenberg, a new wiki page was created to organize development efforts such as this. Would you mind adding the development of a media player for lazarus there, as well as it´s status? The page is here: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/Bounties ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-05-31 03:44 Quote from: "bshellenberg"No takers yet (guess nobody likes money; or.. nobody can do it). I can recommend it for tasks like this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_ZealoN · 2006-06-07 05:34 Quote from: "bshellenberg"No takers yet (guess nobody likes money; or.. nobody can do it). Nice contribution....Opensource != Free (as beer, not as speech) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudieD · 2006-06-07 18:27 If you require something that does not exist and you don't have the time/knowhow to do it your self, you have two options : 1. You can wait untill someone with the knowhow get some available time and do it. 2. You buy some ones time who have the knowhow to do it for you. 2.1 You can then keep it for your self OR 2.2 You can share it with others (Helping the community). So I think that bshellenberg has the right "OpenSource" community spirrit ! Thanks again.
