project does not compile on Laz 0.9.11-20060116 SVN lazarus / 8-Other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mikiwoz · 2006-01-16 20:03 hi there I have migrated to Laz 0.9.11-20060116 (a clean, no-problem install on Kubuntu 5.10 with "alien -c *" ), and my project, wich has compiled OK with 0.9.10, does not compile since. this is the error: Code: [Select](...).inc(32,14) Error: Illegal type conversion: "ShortStrin" to "^Char" this is the code: Code: [Select]function GetFileSize(const FN:string):LongInt; var   R:tStatBuf; begin   if ( stat( pChar(FN), R ) = 0 ) then GetFileSize:=R.st_size else GetFileSize:=-1; end; actually, I get *loads* of such errors. wtf? (I suppose it's an FPC problem, but hope to get help here) i cannot change the code, as it's from a library written by someone else, besides - it's pointless and useless, too many places to change. cheers mike P.S. compiled Laz for GTK2! Yay, it looks *good*... :] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2006-01-16 21:01 Apparently ansistrings have not been enabled. This can be done by adding {$H+} in your source code. Note that {$mode objfpc} turns ansistrings off. Recently fpc changed the parsing of such global directives to solve some bugs and to become more predictable. Now the order can be used to predict the outcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mikiwoz · 2006-01-16 21:22 ok, that solved the problem. now my question is: is it a Bad Thing to have AnsiStrings enabled, and if so - why? thanks for the help mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2006-01-16 21:26 IMHO, it is a good thing to have them enabled. It is just not done by default because of backwards compatibility (just imagine all existing code depending on the fact that strings are shortstrings ;-) ). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mikiwoz · 2006-01-16 22:46 m'kay, thanks a lot
