integrating an online repository for lazarus components lazarus / 6-IDE-CodeTools ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gl3nn · 2009-01-07 10:20 Hi everyone  - Happy new year! Now I have used some time to migrate some of my projects from Delphi to Lazarus, and I must say I'm very impressed of the work which has been put into Lazarus and Free Pascal so far - keep on the good work Anyhow, I have had an idea for improving Lazarus (especially the component area) for a while now and I thought it was time to share it with the rest of the community //The idea: I have thought about making a component manager which works in the same way as a package manager in Linux. Instead of users publish components or complete component packs around the net (and sometimes we never discover these great components), then by giving the users the possibility to publish their components on a common repository BUT instead of downloading packages off a web page, compiling, installing and restarting Lazarus then the users can install the components directly from within the IDE. IMO this has several benefits over the current method of installing components. some of them are: When an updated version of a components or a component pack is updated, then the user can be notified about the update and giving the option to install it. If a component or component pack has dependencies of other projects e.g. SDL units or LNet units and the user doesn't have the required units installed or the required version doesn't match then the component manager can install these too. Easier location of components for specific tasks like audio processing, special database connectivity or skinning of an application just to name a few. Would this idea be realistic or useful? Please give me your opinion about the topic best regards ./Funtex ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Ishenin · 2009-01-09 18:23 Yes, it is useful idea. Will you implement it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gl3nn · 2009-01-19 16:39 Hi Paul Sure I will , even though i've never worked with network programming in lager scale, i will try to do my best to implement this extension. Do you have any good resources to start study regarding network programming on Linux? best regards ./Funtex
