True SDI Interface? lazarus / 6-IDE-CodeTools ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simmo8 · 2008-05-19 21:01 this may be about the third time ive enquired about this. I still believe that Lazarus should be true SDI, in which the background is solid, and not showing underlying windows. Its just my opinion as i have a tendancy to accidentally click underlying windows, even if the interface doesnt get a complete change, would it be possible to include the option of allowing the user select the style of gui to use? I was going to help in this department, but if it is yet to be done i may have to write it from scratch. The problem is if i were to begin to do this myself, where would i start? Main.pp describes the IDE heirarchy, is this where modifications should be? Is the top bar (i know the menu etc is created non-visually) available in visual form, or will it have to be written non-visually? Im thinking of solid background, with the object inspector all tied together on the one form, not floating windows. Please advise thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ñuño_Martínez · 2008-05-20 09:15 "As it is". It's a rule for actual programmers:Quote from: "rule #1 of actual programmers"If it works, don't change it! Seriously, I think that current GUI is nice for me. It is similar than GIMP and Dia ones. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- duncanparsons · 2008-05-20 14:44  I like the current IDE, but I'm not against the SDI idea, if it helps those who might use it. I feel it would make a good option to allow the users to choose. I've used Delphi2K5 for a few years, and really can't abide the VS style and use the 'classic undocked' theme. However, others in my team prefer the docked. I feel it would make a good option to allow the users to choose. Yeah i see what you mean, i know people who like it as it is, but some also would prefer it solid like myself. Im not fussed about the way it looks, my only problem is if i were to find my self consistenly using (or replacing delphi completely) i would have to minimize all my other windows, which i dont really want to. Im always accidentally clicking windows underneath, especially if im on my notebook and using the touchpad. To have the option for the user to choose would be a breakthrough, for me its not RAD because i spend half the time restoring the IDE, instead of coding and dragging components. I hope these things get taking into account for 1.0 :? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simmo8 · 2008-05-20 19:00 i tried joining the source editor onto the main ide bar but when i try to move it, it wont move and just flickers. If there is no clear solution im thinking that although its a good idea in my opinion, i feel it may be taking the lazarus project out of context. Perhaps we should just focus more on other matters, and as for my problems i should just get a mouse :? Perhaps this feature could be added at the very end of lazaruz's dev stage, ive had a go myself implementing this but am getting many problems. These can undoubtedly be solved but its time consuming, i think i will get back to improving the LCL. If anybody does know why the forms joined onto the main ide bar dont move id be interested to know. Edit: i now thought it may be because its not MDI, yet im forcing these forms on! I think i will discontinue this still however, but i thought id add these little notes if i decide to help on this on a later date. But with juggling work, and improving lcl, etc its finding the time. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simmo8 · 2008-05-28 10:09 ok....ive been messing around see if such a feature would work. Well i managed to get some part of it working but then trying to create a simple app became harder work. Although personally i would enjoy such a interface, it would take away the RAD aspect. Maybe its best left alone as it is, ill just be careful when im clicking windows
