CodeInsight feature lazarus / 6-IDE-CodeTools ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MageSlayer · 2006-07-31 10:03 It'll be handy, if Code Insight shows more related functions/procedures according to current expression type. What I mean? For example: type     TCaption = string[23];     TRec = record     end; function GetCaption(V:TCaption):boolean; procedure ProcDo(const R:TRec); procedure DatasetExport(D:TDataset); .... var T:TCaption;       R:TRec;       C:TDataset; begin   ...   T. // here we get Code Insight window, containing GetCaption function   R. // here we get Code Insight window, containing ProcDo procedure   C. // here we get Code Insight window, containing DatasetExport procedure Hope, it is quite clear. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theo · 2006-07-31 12:56 Quote   T. // here we get Code Insight window, containing GetCaption function I don't know I i understand what you mean. But since T in your example is not a record or class type, the syntax with the dot is strange already. You probably mean to get Information about all functions that take a TCaption as parameter or result value? But if T is a String or Integer this would return, well, a lot. Probably it could be restricted to just the unit scope, but that would be rather confusing as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MageSlayer · 2006-07-31 13:43 Yes, you undertsood the idea. Syntax with dot is just just the place where Code Insight might happen. QuoteYou probably mean to get Information about all functions that take a TCaption as parameter or result value? Yes, you are right. I mean parameter(s). QuoteBut if T is a String or Integer this would return, well, a lot. Of course, such base types should be excluded. QuoteProbably it could be restricted to just the unit scope, but that would be rather confusing as well. Restricting to unit scope is not good . You see, I specially gave an example without base types. An example with TDataset is the most general example of a situation. Not every functionality may be added by inheritance (third-party sources, inserting in the center of hierarchy, etc). At present, IDE Code insight doesn't help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CCRDude · 2006-07-31 14:06 Just one small thing: the Delphi IDE is by now that much overloaded with code helping features that it generally takes more time to wait for typed changes than to type them. It sometimes even crashed when just moving the mouse over a field. I really like that Lazarus is smaller on that account And I don't like code help on typing a dot at all (based on bad experiences with Delphi). If this is on Ctrl+Space, well then, ok Regarding unit scope: that could be arranged by order; methods of the current unit coming first. Anyway, I strongly disagree with your "At present, IDE Code insight doesn't help". Speak for yourself only please ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MageSlayer · 2006-08-01 05:28 So, everybody agreed? Ok, now waiting for the final word. to CCRDude QuoteAt present, IDE Code insight doesn't help You know, I meant IDE Code insight doesn't help described situations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theo · 2006-08-01 12:21 Quote from: "MageSlayer"So, everybody agreed? Ok, now waiting for the final word. Not sure if anybody agreed. I don't want this feature, just making things more and more complicated and prone to error. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudieD · 2006-08-01 15:57 I'll second CCRDude and Theo.
