New Interface Please lazarus / 6-IDE-CodeTools ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-05-10 02:40 Look, I know people are liking this interface but I am really not. I mean delphi can pull off the SDI interface but not lazarus. I'm just not feeling it, the interface isn't very friendly. Eitherway I liked in delphi how the properties view and the object treeview were two different windows, there combined and take up too much of the left screen. And when you maximize the source window it covers the toolbars and menus. Which is a tad bit frustrating. I beg of you... Please go to MDI!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bart · 2006-05-10 10:53 Quote from: "Anonymous"I beg of you... Please go to MDI!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! MDI is a Windows only thingy and is no longer supported by MS. So there's not gonna be a MDI interface. Bart ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2006-05-11 05:29 well it doesn't have to MDI, but make it one document window and frame everything or something... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- felipemdc · 2006-08-05 18:30 A optional MDI-style for the IDE will be available after someone finishes implementing Docking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wotanica · 2007-08-17 18:48 I must say i agree with the poster. The interface is terrible (excuse me saying so). I have written quite a few editors in my time, and i have always ended up with an SDI solution, often using a tab control for the main area (with hidden headers). I would suggest the Laz team does the following: 1. Dont let D2007 put you down, it can be done more elegant and faster. 2. Check out other solutions. Like realbasic. Find out what works, and what is to cumbersome. RealBasic has a lot going for it, but a lot of stuff that is also very negative. 3. DreamWeaver is a wonderfull example of a powerfull SDI interface. We dont need all the nice effects, just an IDE that makes it easy to design, easy to code and easy to work with files and layout. 4. The component property editor is extreemely annoying. Even if you coded the edit-field stuff as owner-drawn it would be better than it is right now. It would be much easier to handle in a SDI scenario as well. Other than that - the project is wonderfull. I just wish the editor was better. It's the only thing that makes it hard to work with pascal on linux (i am about to switch because i hate .net). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LazaruX · 2007-08-21 07:17 Can somebody explaine me the differences between SDI and MDI. Also what is docking? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LBAWinOwns · 2007-08-21 09:35 http://developer.kde.org/documentation/standards/kde/style/basics/imag es/mdiVsSdi.png Good example (I assume that's correct, I learned the difference today too ) I think MDI is better, slightly tough. I think docking is that the windows get stuck at one edge side. lets say your screen is 100*100 (just imagine okay :p), and the docked window is maximized, but does only take 1/5th of the screen for example rect(80,0,100,100). The fantastic thing is then that if you maximize a totally different window, then it will not overlap the docked window. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2007-08-22 10:05 The only way there's going to be changes is if you make them. It's that simple. Lazarus doesn't have the manpower to really care about the interface right now, they can't keep up with bug reports anymore because there's 1000s of users now, but like 8 developers... (and that's an optimistic number). I hate to say this (pisses me off too) but if you want something, you just got to do something about it yourself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LazaruX · 2007-08-22 11:38 You r actually right about the less developers, but not everybody has the ability to modify lazarus, I would like to hel pthe project for example, but I know I am not able to do that, because my programming knowledge is not enough. Like me I think a lot of others think the same. I agree that first bugs must be fixed before there are new improevements ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2007-08-28 17:36 My programming knowlidge wasn't enough to hack FPC when I started, and look I fixed a lot of sockets thing and made my own networking library. The important thing is to actually start DOING things. Even if you don't know how, start from small stuff, fix smaller issues you have, look on the web, ask on the channels, but don't ask for fixes only, try to fix it yourself first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LazaruX · 2007-08-31 12:58 You are maybe right, I need to find the time, then I will start doing, (hoping I can do something). Bye PS Where is Almindor1 ? ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antonio · 2007-09-16 18:41 Quote from: "BPsoftware" PS Where is Almindor1 ? ;-) I guess the answer is: "Ask the register". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2007-09-16 19:58 Gone in the winds of time (along with my old email so there's no way to get it back)
