Delphi 2005 interface lazarus / 6-IDE-CodeTools ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Developer · 2004-12-08 15:10 Why don't leave the SDI interface and pass to an MDI interface like Delphi 8 or Delphi 2005? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam.Pilorz · 2004-12-08 17:15 Well... Because it need to be worked out, and many developers don't like it. I know at least 5 developers which hate D8 and D9 because of their unpractical interface. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2004-12-08 20:36 I would also appreciate an MDI-Interface. Maybe they could make the possibility to connect the forms by drag an drop. So then it is optional. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lightning · 2004-12-08 21:59 You could connect forms even without MDI but floating and docking isn't supported yet. I hate resizing a form in another form (a la MS), it's ugly !!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Angello · 2004-12-17 15:07 Quote from: "The Developer"Why don't leave the SDI interface and pass to an MDI interface like Delphi 8 or Delphi 2005? I like the current interface. I think that there are more important things than changing interface - improving components, debuging support, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2005-03-04 18:41 I hate Delphi 8 and higher interface too. Delphi 7 and current Lazarus rock. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mikiwoz · 2005-03-07 19:50 I agree. SDI is definetely nicer and more practical. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lightning · 2005-03-15 09:07 MDI interfaces are good for Graphics, maybe even web design, but a RAD developement tool should be SDI. I know at least 70% of the Delphi developers hate D8 and D2005. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2005-04-11 10:20 try to use SDI on a dual monitor system and you will find out why (at least me) won't put any effort in getting Lazarus SDI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lightning · 2005-04-12 10:52 You mean MDI, Lazarus is curently SDI MDI(Multiple Document Interface) is the maximised with child forms interface like Photoshop. SDI(Single Document Interface) is the "floating forms" type of IDE like GIMP. I think that Graphics apps like GIMP should be MDI but Developemnt apps like Lazarus should be SDI, so Lazarus is OK. Maybe a dual interface system in the future, who knows ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2005-04-13 09:53 ehm yeah, I meant MDI ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2005-05-16 22:12 KDevelop handles the whole MDI/SDI thing really nice. They have a library that takes care of the look of the program, you can change it between standard MDI, SDI, and some variations there of. Lazarus could probably do the same thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2005-05-17 06:55 Lazarus could propably do the same thing, but ... I rather have Lazarus ready for version 1 and all documentation in order, before the possibility to switch interfaces between SDI and MDI. (But that might be because I like the current interface for Lazarus better then the Delphi 2005 interface. ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- qodah · 2006-08-04 12:18 My be Lazarus must have SDI n MDI feature, so users can choose what IDE they likes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudieD · 2006-08-04 16:26 First things first VERSION ! (:_:) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Langecrew · 2007-09-05 19:53 Um... uh, guys...I hate to be the one to let the cat out of the bag here, but there's no reason to hate delphi just because of the interface.  it can display its windows in a docked, or in an undocked style, whichever the user wants.  If you hate delphi just because of the interface, I can only assume that you didn't actually try to use it. if you really want reasons to hate delphi, I can give you all you want. just read the third post down on this page, and you'll never want to use delphi again: http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtop ic&t=3199&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 and, yes, lazarus should implement BOTH interface designs.  People are wary of using free software for a variety of reasons, some of which are unclear design/lack of customization/difficulty in setup/complete and total unfamiliarity/etc... and these are due to lack of support/poor design/poor planning/lack of resources/etc... amongst other things.  I don't mean to say that lazarus has any of those problems, no...what I mean to say is that it is the lazarus team's responsibility to make people want to use Free Pascal, and it is a classic up-hill battle.  It is not going to be easy to make people make the switch, so you'd better make it as easy for them as you can.  It doesn't matter what any one developer, user, or even group likes or dislikes...don't forget that lazarus is meant to be a large, mature product with a wide and diverse user base.  (and, personally, I think lazarus is doing fantastic so far) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zaher · 2007-09-06 00:26 I use at my work Delphi 2007 and i hate it, hate the new IDE, we (me and my co worker) like Delphi classic style like as Lazarus, Now i am working using lazarus for commercial project and i feel it is good, not necessary to change, just improve it, like search for property in the inspector and others things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simmo8 · 2008-05-17 14:21 i do believe it should be MDI, with a solid background, not floating windows. For me its unpractical, and unitdy. My main concern with the SDI is the fact i sometimes find myself clicking on underlying windows, like notepad etc. If it were solid like photoshop id be happy. I use Delphi7 so much, and its only the SDI i hate, please consider MDI with solid background. If not is there any advice how to make it MDI myself, i read in the source something about the boss parent, object inspector etc cannot all be together. I would prefer such a feature   ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zaher · 2008-05-17 20:17 In MDI forms the position of Form in design time have no meaning it always 0, 0  or you must define it in Property Editor, BTW i am not use Form Left/Top at design time at all, but it is step to look at dummy property  Position=poDesigned.
