GIS Components for Lazarus lazarus / 5-Lazarus Extra Components ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kaos · 2007-11-06 04:33 Is there anyone out there currently developing any GIS components for Lazarus. Is anyone who is good at C++ (I suck BIG at it   ) interested in helping port an open source OCX written in C++ over to a Lazarus Component???. I use the open source MapWindow GIS (www.mapwindow.org). MW is a .NET app but the heart of it is an .ocx component - maybe that's what you're referring to? It would be great to have something like MW (or its engine) available on other platforms (Mac OS X particularly). I suspect the challenge in porting something like this would not be in the C++ code (OS X and Linux both have the GCC C++ compiler) but in writing the equivalent calls for all the Windows API-specific stuff that they're undoubtedly doing. Thanks. -Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kaos · 2007-11-07 06:58 i feel in writing a GIS control that is fully cross platform compatible the idea would be to make the OS specific functions a library file that is called at compile time. i wrote a similar thing for a previous client ( a Cross Platform compatible CAD / Survey Package) that used libraries for mac and windows and unix to handle OS specific issues. it was clunky to compile but it worked OK on all platforms basically - there were hardware issues but that is again a seperate issue. TatukGIS is a control that has possibilities - it is a vcl control for delphi but its not open source. i kinda got it to compile with lazarus under windows and it worked reasonably well though slow. and it almost compiles undr lazarus for linux but there are some type library issues - particulary those dealing with thematic rendering. years ago i came across a platform independant GIS control that worked on both unix and windows but cant remember the name of it - that was written in C++ - we never pursued its use at the time due to the excessivley high deployment royalties. im more and more impressed with Lazarus the more i mess with it - ( im a newbie to Lazars of about a week - being previously a delphi / kylix programmer) -  i hope to be able to progress this GIS Control as a LCL component for Lazarus - Cheers Al. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil · 2007-11-07 15:20 Quote from: "Kaos"years ago i came across a platform independant GIS control that worked on both unix and windows but cant remember the name of it - that was written in C++ - we never pursued its use at the time due to the excessivley high deployment royalties. im more and more impressed with Lazarus the more i mess with it - ( im a newbie to Lazars of about a week - being previously a delphi / kylix programmer) -  i hope to be able to progress this GIS Control as a LCL component for Lazarus The C++ source for the MapWindow .ocx _is_ open source (MPL 1.1): http://svn.mapwindow.org/svnroot/MapWinGIS4Dev/ Thanks. -Phil
