Why Lazarus Android is not famous lazarus / 43-Android ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Packs · 2023-07-01 18:05 Hi friends, I have downloaded all demo. It is working perfectly on device. Performance was good. All features are there like Java and kolian. Why Lazarus Android is not famous. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BlueIcaro · 2023-07-01 19:56 May be the question is why Free Pascal is not famous, even Delphi? /Blueicaro ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maurobio · 2023-07-01 20:56 Hi, @Pradesh, QuoteWhy Lazarus Android is not famous. Because it is not documented (eg., there are no books or realistic tutorials(, the available demos are not realistic and, it must be added, there seems to be really no big experts on its use (or if there are, they are not here in the forum). I however share your opinion that LAMW deserves to be more widely known and used for the development of real apps, as in my still not very large experience with Android development, I can say that, despite the above mentioned shortcomings, LAMW is better than Delphi (for anything, including development for mobile devices), although of course some Delphi developers disagree. With best regards, and good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- colo · 2023-07-01 21:08 I've got to ask since it's not really obvious to me: What's the recommended starting point to tip one's toes into Lazarus-powered fpc development targeting Android devices? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maurobio · 2023-07-01 21:18 Hi, @colo, QuoteI've got to ask since it's not really obvious to me: What's the recommended starting point to tip one's toes into Lazarus-powered fpc development targeting Android devices? There are none AFAIK. The available "tutorial" is as poor as the next "hello, world" program (in whatever programming language), but perhaps creates the entirely false and subjective perception that by creating an useless "hello, world" program with LAMW, one is already "an Android developer". In my experience with Android development using LAMW what I can sincerely advise you is to start developing a simple, but fully functional app, which you may use as a test bed for learning the problems & tricks of real development under Android (and they are legion!). I have myself developed such a simple program, a tool for computing the area of geometric shapes called "Euclid", which may even be more- or-less useful for teaching geometry, but which main purpose is to try and learn in practice Android development using LAMW. With best regards, and good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2023-07-02 23:39 Quote from: Prakash on July 01, 2023, 08:05:37 pmWhy Lazarus Android is not famous. The most contributing factor for fame is marketing, second is commercial support, we don't have any of that. Android Studio is heavy, loads slowly, eats a bunch of resources, but it's made and maintained by the Android maintainer: Google, so most people will instead upgrade their hardware to support the heavy system requirement for the sense of development safety, not to mention there are plenty resources available. Consider Lazarus for Android to Android Studio as Linux to Windows: it's more efficient, but not for the masses as you need to tinker and configure more instead of just working out of the box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maurobio · 2023-07-03 11:19 Hi, @Leledumbo! We should stop complaining and whining, give up the defeatist discourse and rise the flag of FPC/Lazarus/LAMW, developing applications with these tools, studying and learning to use them to the best advantage and spreading the word. This is a call to arms! Best regards, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eugene Loza · 2023-07-03 11:48 Almost offtopic, but a note regarding "rising the flag" - I just realized that https://wiki.freepascal.org/Logos_and_Banners doesn't have information on how logos/banners are licensed (and therefore if and how they can be used inside of other applications, including commercial ones). I'm sure this information is available somewhere, but I believe that adding it to wiki would be beneficial. Also an SVG version would be very welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maurobio · 2023-07-03 12:06 Dear ALL, The beautiful Free Pascal logo can also be used to stamp T-shirts! So, we can not only "raise the flag", but also wear the shirt! Is it approved by Free Software Foundation and available at this list https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html? Can I apply for GitLab for Open Source Program when my repository has content licensed with this license? (It's a joke, I do believe the license is something like CC-BY or CC-BY-SA, GPL as worst-case scenario, it just needs some more clarity at that wiki page) P.S. Copyright notice in the Wiki's footer isn't helpful either and looks really weird on screen Code: Text [Select][+][-]window.onload = function(){var x1 = document.getElementById("main_content_section"); if (x1) { var x = document.getElementsByClassName("geshi");for (var i = 0; i
