GIFImage lazarus / 39-Graphics ---------------------------------------------------------------------- geraldholdsworth · 2012-04-30 17:35 One of my projects in Lazarus will be to port a Delphi project from Delphi 2006 (on Windows) to Lazarus (for Mac OS X). Part of this project is the use of GIF Image. So, does Lazarus support GIF images natively or will I need to port this component across (I've got it as a unit, rather than a component, just so I can save images out as GIFs - I'm not interested at this stage in displaying them)? Cheers, Gerald. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marcov · 2012-04-30 18:06 Afaik there is only read support for gif, I assume GIF was patent encumbered for a long time. The logical alternative is png (which is also tight for the types that gif is small for) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-04-30 18:25 Searching the wiki for GIF threw up this: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/PascalMagick ... but I've never worked with it... ... and perhaps it isn't what you want as you mentioned a component... OTOH you said you wanted to save out images as GIFs so perhaps ImageMagick/PascalMagick can convert it.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2012-05-01 03:45 AFAIR there at least two TGIFImage component for Lazarus (3rd party), the first one from Wile64, the other somewhere in this forum (just search for GIF). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- geraldholdsworth · 2012-05-06 14:54 I've searched the forum for GIF before I posted this, and since, and still unable to find a component. However, I did manage to find ugifimage on the web - although I haven't tried it out yet. Cheers, Gerald. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lainz · 2012-05-06 15:45 There is some gif support in BGRABitmap. And also there is my slow component BGRASpriteAnimation, you can load a gif and convert to sprite to load with this component, but it's really slow with big images. Btw you can handle each image in the gif directly with BGRABitmap. I don't know if it's possible to read the gif animation speed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- User137 · 2012-05-06 17:09 Oh cool, there's some new information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Interchange_Format QuoteThe US LZW patent expired on June 20, 2003.[19] The counterpart patents in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy expired on June 18, 2004, the Japanese counterpart patents expired on June 20, 2004 and the counterpart Canadian patent expired on July 7, 2004.[19] Consequently, while Unisys has further patents and patent applications relating to improvements to the LZW technique,[19] the GIF format may now be used freely.
