converting .so to work with apache

I have a .so file that works fine under linux and would like to
insert its functions into a linux apache server as a module.

Ideally I'd like it to be able to function before the server does
anything at all with incomming connections and again before it sends
responses.

Does anyone know if this is feasable and if converting a standard .so
into
an apache module is complicated?
